A few possibilities
The plug fell out. The little round plug goes into the light GREEN one.
The speakers are not turned on. Or the speaker's power cord fell out.
The sound is set to MUTE. Do you see a red circle line through it on the Task Bar? Click once on it, so you get the volume control, uncheck the mute checkbutton and slide the sound UP.
If you do not see the sound control near the clock on the task bar, I would wonder about the sound card driver software.
Open Windows Media Player, and try to play a tune. Use the OPEN item in the FILE MENU, then look at the C drive and pick the Windows folder. Then open the Media folder and open up anything. HIT THE PLAY BUTTON.

there are a couple of methods
1. check the connection is connected properly
2. check if the driver for the sound card is working, if not roll back the driver
3. another way to solve your driver problem, is to do a system restore
start>programs>accsessorys>system tools>system restore(xp only)
4. by a new sound card

Make sure your volume is turned up. Bottom of screen there should be a arrow(mine is on the right side just to the left of my time). Click on the arrow and find your volume icon(usually a speaker) and click on it. Turn volume up if it is on mute.

make sure that nothing is muted and that everything is turned on. there should be a little speaker by the clock, double click that and make sure that it is not muted and that the slider is not all the way at the bottom. you can aslo get there from control panel
