Because they allow you to immerse yourself into another time/place/person/thing and just not worry about anything for a while. They are fun and a form of entertainment not unlike tv or movies, but with a video games you get to create the action and interact.

I think because we can put ourselves in a different world or setting and act as someone else. Most people fantasize or wonder what it would be like if we could live as another person and we don't feel held back in a video game because it's not real life. Therefore, you can do whatever you want (almost). That's what makes them so appealing.
Also, depending on the game, there may be missions or levels that you have to get to or complete. And even if you win the game, maybe you can come back and try to get a higher score or find this hidden level or something... How can that not be addictive and popular?

I'm a girl, one of the least likely people to answer. Video games take us to a whole different world. They provide scenarios where we wouldn't normally be. They make you a do things you wouldn't do in real life. There is also skill that is involved. This is necessary so we play to improve our gaming. It also takes our mind off of life, and is a good thing to do when there is nothign to do. They are an unreal version of what we would like life to be and we live it out that way. Pokemon games are a good example. And racing games let us live racing without risking our lives.
In the end, I think that video games are very popular because of entertainment, and that they are a good entertainment!

People like to play. They play all kinds of games. Physical games like football and basketball and polo. Mind games like Parcheesi and chess. So naturally, when computers came along, they made computer games. At first they were a lot like simple arcade games like pinball, which XP has, btw. But the challenge was on, and they made them more and more complex as the hardware and the software became more and more capable. Now they are such that if somebody saw a modern game back in 1990, they would just drop their jaws in amazement. And since they are so realistic and interactive, they are especially well liked.
