Are you wanting a dog just to protect your home or are you truly looking for a protection dog? In either case, you really don't want to try this at home - you need professional guidance. Use one of the trainer searches below to have a significant chance of finding a dog-friendly trainer in your area.
If you treat your dog well and properly provide for them in all areas, your dog will take care of you. A Golden Retriever that I know of actually protected her dad from a moose attack. Even a barking dog (any breed, any size) will significantly deter intruders. - g^2
P.S. It's too bad the DontBuyABichon site isn't real, but I found the thought amusing. And, yes, I like the breed.
P.P.S. As for not socializing _any_ dog, that's just a recipe for disaster. However, I assume the author was being facetious.

All the crap you've ever heard about beatings or feeding the dog gunpowder to make him mean are bogus, abusive crap. To make a dog more confident, expose him to lots of new people and situations. Then he'll be able to tell a threat from a situation that is not serious. Some breeds are naturally tougher, while others will never be aggressive no matter what you do. If you teach your dog to bite, you will have a huge liability problem - you and your family can be sued or even go to jail if your dog injures someone. Your homeowner's insurance policy may refuse to cover you if you have a dangerous dog. Most dogs never get to bite someone breaking into your house or attacking you - they bite your friends or visitors. How would you feel if your dog mauled someone's child? If you really need protection that bad, get a gun. at least it doesn't have a mind of its own. http://www.fataldogattacks.com/statistics.html

I suppose that you're regarding a personal security canine. Safeguard dogs are bred certainly to look after property and belongings. Individual security puppies are bred to look after not most effective property, but persons as good. To answer your question, yes, a well-trained personal defense dog will look after its proprietor (with its life). Persons purchase personal safeguard dogs for protection/protection motives. Do you are living in an discipline the place houses are traditionally burglarized? Do you live in a town where females are quite often overwhelmed and/or raped? Do you've gotten a stalker who is not going to leave your by myself? Do you have kids? Are you single females that lives alone? Do you dislike the concept of carrying round a handgun? Do you could have a dwelling or vehicle that you just think wants protection? When you answered yes to any of those, then you've got a rationale to buy a private defense dog. Edit: concerning private security puppies and guns, private defense dogs are above all expert to target arms that are retaining weapons. Advanced training may also be achieved to train puppies to assault when any person moves/motions their weapon hand (i.E.: a gunman raises his handgun to fireplace). Additionally, individual safeguard puppies are confronted with situations that might occur in actual existence (burglaries, auto theft, etc.). They recognize when and find out how to assault. If a burglar went up once more a personal safety canine, my wager can be on the individual safety canine. The burglar, like most humans, would usually be startled via the canine. For this reason, he would not shoot proper away. If he did go to shoot, the canine would obviously attack. Plus, even though the dog was hit, if it was not a lethal shot, the dog would still attack.

It's best to take your dog to a professional school. That way, you won't be training the dog to be vicious, there are enough of those types around. You want your dog to be alert to strangers and not attack anyone, unless of course, they are breaking in or attacking you.
