I let a friend who wsa going through a tough time live with me for awhile, til he got back onhis feet. He stole my checkbook and wrote about $2000 worth before someone realized what had happened. I didn't let it spoil me on helping other people though. I would rather be someone who is kind hearted and sometimes gets taken advantage of than be someone who is jaded and doesn't feel that anyone is trustworthy. Remember at some point every needs help from others. How would it feel if you were the one in the situation. Sometimes to do the right thing a risk has to be made. I have made some wonderful lifelong friends just by giving someone a helping hand.

What do you mean by backfired? That it didn't turn out the way you wished it would? Whether a good deed turned out the way you wished, if it was a good deed indeed, it should not matter if it backfired. And though you may think it backfired, maybe it did just in your eyes. Re-evaluate what you are thinking. And always do a good deed when the opportunity presents itself. Especially when you won't get any credit.

Once picked up a hitchhiker, he got in the truck I was driving and eww did he reak of booze. After that I didn`t give rides to anyone for a long time. There was another hitcher going close to where I lived, I told him I would let him off at the store. He must not have heard me he got really angry and yelled and complained to everyone the would listen. What a pain.

A coworker was having a conversation with another coworker and another coworker overheard and spread all sorts of rumors. I found out coworker #1 ( that was having the conversation) found out about it and was very upset. So I confronted co-worker #3 ( the one spreading rumors) that #1 was upset and I thought he owed her an apology. Well, he did , but he did it in an embarrassing manner in front of lots of people. Now she is afraid of saying anything out loud to anyone for fear of it escalating. I felt even sorrier and now clam up a lot myself as a result.
