it is how you look at it. in california it costs more to buy food and to live in the city of malibu, and beverly hills, etc... when it costs less in the city of carson, gardena, compton, etc... just like in hawaii, it costs more to live and shop in the city of waikiki, kailua, hawaii kai, etc... when it is less to less to live in the city of waianae, waipahu, ewa beach, etc... the only thing that cost more really is a gallon of milk which is over 5 dollars a gallon and gas and to go on a vacation.

Its a question of perspective.. if you are used to live in expensive areas, such as New York, San Francisco, the Hawaii is not really that expensive.

Yes it is, compared to many other places. Hawaii is like the 4th overpriced place according to Forbes 2006. The apartments there are scarce and expensive and jobs are not many and don't pay well either.

It is expensive because land is a premium...and its not that things are imported but because the land that they store stuff on isn't cheap so that is where the extra cost for everything comes from. Housing is just as expensive as NY or SF. Apartments are usually really small.

Yes! Highest gas & car ins. rates in the US. Groceries expensive, everything we get has to be shipped here so imagine how much the shipping company has to charge. There is only a limited amount of land available. Median price of a home this month $600,000, Condo$250,000. Milk, Cereal, toilet paper, & Maui is even more. But I wouldn't live anywhere else, most of the people are great, low murder & rape rate, only high property crimes because of methamphetamine addicts.
