I love the British Army, but I think the US Army would be so much easier because of all my training etc. Also... The weather is better, and I fancy a change!!!

Paul, according to AR 600-210, you would be able to join the US Army as long as you have an I-551 (Permanent Alien Resident) card, can pass the physical and ASVAB, have your education paperwork evaluated (MEPS will do this), and no felony law violations/open law violations.

Of all that which I listed above, the hardest to obtain will be the I-551 card. That will take a couple of years, because you first have to have the TEMPORARY Alien Resident card.

I suggest that you check the Immigration and Naturalization Service website for more up to date information. If you are in England, and are near a US military base, you could also see if you could talk to a recruiter. If not, then go to: www.goarmy.com

There may be a way to transfer through the UN, but the easy way is to just move to America and Join the Army. You do not have to be a citizen of the US to serve for up to 3-5 years. During that time you can work on being a citizen. You will also be able to still wear some of your badges that you earned in the British Army. You just have to submit paperwork to the US Army and they will tell you what is approved. Due to the fact that you have served before you may keep some of your rank as well. Usually if you were a SGT they can make you a SPC at first then promote you after you finish training. What is your job and rank in the British Army, I can tell you what will best fit you in the US Army. I served for 14 years in the US Army, so you can email me with more questions.

My brother tried this a few weeks ago. He was told it was not possible to transfer, and was given the strong suggestion that unless he gained citizenship, he could foget about joining the US army at all. Sorry!

Why on earth would you want to do that? Are you insane? Try being proud of the fact that you are a soldier in the most effective fighting army in the world.

It can be done... all you have to have is a Green Card... authorization to work in the U.S. then go to your local recruiter (I say "Go Navy", but if the Army is your thing...), it's that simple as long as you are otherwise qualified. Soldier Hard.

Grow your beard, wrap a t-towel round your head - take a holiday in Afghanistan or Iraq (you'll love the weather) - and you'll soon be with the US Army.
