Actually- it's 59.
I make rosaries-both the kind given away and nicer ones....it's 59.
You need to look at the history of the rosary to understand why it is set up the way t is.
People used to memorize all 150 Psalms, and would use strings of beads to help them keep track of where they were in the count. But illiterate people wanted to pray this way too. So they started using the beads to count off Our Fathers. A string of 50 beads prayed 3 times was easier to manage than 150 beads.
Along the way, the groups were broken into 5 sets of 10. and the 10 prayers became Hail Marys. The Hail Mary's are recited while person praying meditates on specific events in the life of Jesus. the prayer becomes a way to occupy the mind and free it from the distractions of the world while focusing on the events of Jesus life.
So, to pray the rosary, you start with the Crucifix and say the Apostle's Creed, then say an Our Father, then there are three beads where you pray for the virtues of faith hope and charity. Then there is another Our Father that is actually the start of the first group of 10.
Our Father beads separate the groups of 10. So there are 5 groups of 10, with single beads ( our Fathers) separating them.

A set of Rosary beads usually contains 50 beads in groups of ten (a decade), with an additional large bead before each decade. Some beads have been known to have one hundred or one hundred and fifty. These numbers were chosen to match the number of psalms, or a third or two-thirds of them. Although counting the prayers on a string of beads is customary, the prayers of the Rosary do not actually require a set of beads, but can be said using any type of counting device, or even by counting on one's fingers.

If your rosary has fifty-eight, you're missing a bead.
After making the sign of the cross and saying the Apostle's (or Nicene-Constantonopolitan) Creed,
On the bead say the Our Father.
On the next three beads say a Hail Mary each.
On the fifth bead, say the Glory Be.
After saying the Our Father and announcing the Mystery,
Say ten hail Mary's (now we're at fifteen)
On the sixteenth, say the Glory Be, Oh My Jesus/ Come Holy Spirit, announce the next Mystery, and say an Our Father.
Say ten Hail Mary's.
On the twenty seventh bead, say the Glory Be, Oh My Jesus/ Come Holy Spirit, announce the next Mystery, and say an Our Father.
Say ten Hail Mary's.
On the thirty eighth bead, say the Glory Be(and sometimes an Oh My Jesus, or Come Holy Spirit), announce the next Mystery, and say an Our Father.
Say ten Hail Mary's.
On the forty ninth Bead, say the Glory Be (and sometimes an Oh My Jesus, or Come Holy Spirit), announce the next Mystery, and say an Our Father.
Say ten more Hail Mary's, bringing you to the fifty ninth bead.
This is usually followed by a Hail Holy Queen, some litany, Oh God Whose Son, or other prayer or prayers.

True Christians view prayer as a most valuable provision of the Creator—a real gift to be highly prized. Prayer is respectful speech to Almighty God. It should convey our innermost feelings and heartfelt thoughts. “Prayer should be an expression of one’s friendship with God,” says the New Catholic Encyclopedia. Petitioning God should never become a meaningless routine, nor should we hold rigidly to some favorite set of memorized words.—(Matthew 6:7,8) . . .. But when praying, do not say the same things over and over again, just as the people of the nations do, for they imagine they will get a hearing for their use of many words. So, do not make yourselves like them, for God YOUR Father knows what things YOU are needing before ever YOU ask him. . .
Does the Rosary contribute to such meaningful prayers? Repetitious prayers serve no useful purpose, since God has promised: “Before they call, I will answer.” (Isaiah 65:24, NAB) Almighty God appreciates and answers petitions that are said with the right motive and that come from an honest and sincere heart. The Rosary does not help a person to approach God with meaningful, heartfelt prayers.— Hebrews 10:22.
How to Approach God
The only acceptable way to gain access to the “Hearer of prayer” is through Jesus Christ. (Psalm 65:2) Jesus plainly taught: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6, JB) Mary was not invited to share this responsibility and serve as an intermediary. If Mary had been granted this unique privilege, surely Jehovah God would have made it known.—Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 John 2:1, 2.
The Rosary and recitation of memorized prayers originated outside of professedly Christian lands. Praying to Mary ignores what Jesus taught, that “no one can come to the Father except through [him].” Thus, the Rosary and Mary are not God’s way to approach Him in prayer.
