Good reason or legitimate reasons for going UA/AWOL.
- Terminal Illness, such as having three to four monthes left to live and would rather die somewhere peaceful instead of a military/naval hospital.
- Serious illness in immediate family and command won't let you leave.
- Mental Illiness, ACTUAL mental defect or insanity and you forgot you were in the Navy or Marines.

The trick is to get it authorized. As in if there is a huge problem preventing you from getting back you need to call & explain the situation, then bring evidence. Generally chain of command is very reasonable & understanding unless you have a history of issues.
