"And Jesus passing be saw a man who was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him:Rabbi, who hath sinned, this man or his parents that he should be born blind?"

The question is how could the blind man have sinned before birth?

It's obvious that people back then and there (at least the questioner) believed in reincarnation (which is a fact, whether you believe in it or not).

Jesus' answer was the most gentle and considerate when he said, "it is just God's work being done".
"God's work" is the strict law of karma, which is that we reap what we sew and nothing more or less ever.

But obviously both men must have sinned, the blind man to have this affliction, and the father to be punished with the burden of caring for a blind son.

It is Jesus' beautiful way of telling us that the past is not nearly as important as how we deal with it. . .in a positive manner. . .like if someone slaps us, let them slap you again. . .it's just the "coming around" of an ancient "go around", and is best met without ego.

I guess you are as confused as the disciples. Did you bother to read the next verse?

Jesus states quite clearly that this mans blindness was not a result of sin.

Also, most Jews and Christians would believe that God is outside of time and knows all---so, while modern people normally do not believe that physical illness is always a result of sin (although some obviously are) it would not be uncommon for people in that day and age to believe that a congenital defect was the result of either the persons sinfulness or the parents.

Adam and Eve are created souls, they sinned. Sin is imperfection. All was perfect when Adam and Eve were created. It must be made that way again.
If God and Jesus had ended all, started over, there would be no Adam or Abraham's seed.
John 17:3,5,24[Jesus was with God before the world was, Col.1:15];
Job.38:4-7[The angels were there, Heb.1:6,9,10];
All now are born souls into sin[imperfections], to die, needing a SAVIOR since Eden.
1Cor.15:22-28;
As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1Cor.15:51-53;
Those for the new heavens.
Those for the new earth 2Pet.3:13; Isa.65:17; 66:1,22; Rev.21:1-5;
All is made new as it was before sin in Eden of man Heb.9:27; and angel Jude 6; and the flood made earth not life sustaining, so that age went from 969 after sin and before flood, to age 70 in 3,029 after Eden when king David died 1,373 years after the flood.
David died 1,037 years before Christ birth in Roman Empire. Matt.22:42-45;
Jesus crucified and ascended in year 33.
Heb.2:9,14,16[Jesus death gives him the right to do away with Satan and death];
Rev.20:1-6,12,13[From any place, sea or even death, is the resurrected];

All souls born after Adam are promised a resurrection. Luke 8:50,52,54,55;
Jesus gave an illustration, also Matt.27:52,53; The Spirit that brought Jesus back was so strong, it brought back others as well. Psm.104:29,30[the resurrection is same as they are created out of the dust];

You are misconstruing what is being said in this verse. The disciples are asking if this man was born with a sinful heart, or did his parents do something?

Of course, no one can sin before birth, but we are all born with a sinful nature.

It was the custom of the times to believe that "the sins of the fathers are visited upon their sons, and their sons' sons down unto several generations". This was like a superstition in a way but it relates to some definite passages in the old testament, such as the seed of Cain being cursed, etc. Obviously, it is not possible to sin prior to one's conception, but Christians also believe that each of us, by our simple incarnation, are stained by the original sin of Adam and Eve in the garden, the sin of pride or disobedience to God's will and intentions for us. Even a willful little baby shows signs of the selfishness which led to the "fall".
You have to remember, the disciples often show their naivete in spiritual matters, with just such "misplaced" questions. The answers given by our Lord are always, you notice, POINT ON!
Thanks for your question. Sincerely, UC Steve.

thats a really interesting question... He said or his parents, so that would be like saying original sin twice. If it were adam and eve then everyone would be born blind, God doesnt just punish some people... that wouldnt make sense.

Thats a very interesting question.

Because of the whole Original Sin thing, remember? We are ALL born unclean, and the only way to be made clean is through Christ's blood.

Aren't we all born with original sin? It was Eve's fault, she ate the apple! When you are saved and baptised, your original sin is forgiven and you are cleansed. From that point on you, and you alone, are responsible for your own sins and must confess and repent, and ask God for forgivness

The Bible is discussing Original Sin. "In Adam's Fall, we sinned all."
