Whenever something bad happens, it seems the best some Christians can do is to spout some cliche like "the Lord works in mysterious ways" or "everything happens for a reason". There's also "you need the Lord", as if they were peddling some kind of drug . You might as well just take pills instead, if a mere good feeling is all that you're focused on getting.

Faith is the only solution in bad times. (What ever your faith may be) If you don't have something to believe in and hope for what's the point in working hard and trying to be a good person?

I do not know why people say those things, instead of offering some of the real comfort provided in the Bible. It's probably because they are not biblically educated enough to give the correct Scripture.

Also, when people are suffering from loss or tragedy, it is not a good idea to point out their sins as being the cause of their loss. A woman eats nothing but sugar donuts and smokes cigarrettes during her pregnancy, then has a child born with all sorts of health problems, which later take the child's life. Do you honestly think at that time of loss, the woman wants to hear that she was the cause? No, her loss is too great, and she is in no position to hear such things, true as they may be.

The strength that comes for the Lord give meaning to these phrases. All Christians have weathered the storms of life and came out better and stronger for them so we use thes as touchstones that we may not know what to do or how thing will work out but we have faith that things will calm and good will come.
The other option is to curl up and die. I love the idea of heaven but if it is such a nifty place why di God make here and spend a whole lot of the bible living here.

I suspect afterthe first few thousand years in heaven thing get kind of boring.

Our faith is tested in many ways. That's just the way this world is. I'm not sure why some people expect to live in a world that's free of bad times, testing, and difficulty. It's unrealistic.

We don't need to look for "quick fixes" for bad times, whether it's by "taking pills" or some other way. Society is like that -- we constantly want immediate relief from any sort of pain or discomfort.

Sometimes the best way to deal with it is to just endure it -- with our faith as the catalyst.

Of course, at the end of the day, religion's purpose is not to offer real solutions during bad times -- even though it does serve that purpose at times.

The real purpose of religion is to get us to Heaven.

I don't practice any particular organized religion, but apparently there's something to it. I have had a few instances in my life that can only be described as a miracle. Some people definitely overdo it, in my opinion, but the more I think about it, the more I believe there is some kind of higher power than myself. Overcoming depression and alcoholism, for example. I don't think I could have done it without some kind of divine intervention.

Wow! I like Ben Qs response.

Sometimes when things go bad people turn to the Lord to get out from under pressure. The Christian life is a life of suffering though. There is also great joy in it. Some people think the rewards are eternal vs. temperal.

My faith is not based on emotions. I love God when things are going good. I love God when it seems like everything is falling apart. I make it a point not to spout cliches when I don't know the spiritual answer for something happening. Instead, I try to research it in the Bible and in sermons I listen to.

its gotten me and mine through many situations that should have resulted in death. Things that cant be explained by witnesses or doctors.

I can walk, and iam normal, that shouldnt be, since i should have died, or atleast lost my hip and muscle to meningitis. And thats just one thing, there are many others.

Bad things happen because people let them, and then weak people blame it on God, when they were given power by him to live a blessed life and have control over the earth and all its things, including sickness and poverty. God is a mystery, but he loves to reveal those mysteries, saying hes working in mysteries is a load of bull crap that lazy people say instead of praying.

Interesting that you make a drug analogy.

Karl Marx said religion is the "opiate of the people." It really is like a drug. It helps people deal with pain but also keeps them from addressing real problems because they are so deluded.

Some Christians are like non-christians who dont know what to say or say it at the right time. If you were in the middle of a horrendous thing happening to you, and if you thought of God at the time, you would know that God really exists.
