"Got" is the past tense of the verb "to get". You get something in order to have it. Getting is similar to obtaining, buying, and so on. Having means, basically, that something is already in your possession.
Some people say, "I got it," when they mean, "I have it." That's probably the source of your apparent confusion.

Proper In A Sentence

It is a somewhat archaic transitive verb meaning to let loose, as in : "Cry quack and loose the ducks of indifference." - Shakespeare. Perhaps it's the fact that the sound in lose, loser etc is "oo" that causes the alarmingly common spelling mistake. It is a mistake right ? I see it so often that I wonder if it is not an American spelling.

I got up this morning.

I got a mug out of the cupboard and poured my coffee in it.

It's the past tense of "get", so you use it when you are speaking in the past tense in a sentence where you would use "get" in the present tense.

When I drink all that coffee, I got to go to the bathroom. NOT!

Clearly, you wouldn't use "get" there. It's also the present tense. So I HAVE to go to the bathroom.

You shouldn't ever really use "got" in a sentence. it is proper to use "have" and it sounds better to use "have" in a sentence rather than using "got".

Other than the phrase "pet peeve", that is my worst pet peeve.
I thought people are always trying to shorten their speech.
"I've got"...That's saying I have got.
Songs like, "I've got a brand new pair of roller skates, you've got a brand new key", and before that, "I've got a crush on you, sweety pie" certainly don't help things.

"Did you get it?"
"Got it."
"Good."
