I'm a fairly good flight attendant, always trying to be nice to my customers and friendly to everyone. When you go on a cruise, you tip everyone who serves you but when you get on the airplane to go home, you quit.
Years ago "they" told us not to accept tips because "they" paid us nicely enough. OK, we all know that's changed. So what's up with not tipping your flight attendants?

Let's be clear.....This flight attendant doesn't make $60,000 a year. In the old days I did, but now I"m gone a LOT more, longer days, company in bankruptcy, losing retirement, huge pay cuts to stay in business and making about $35,000. And whoever said to get a real job.....Oh, how I'd like to have you on one of my trips! We'd have a little "come to Jesus" talk!

kinda hard to erase decades of what society has deemed as "tippable" roles and "non-tippable" ones. frankly, i'm opposed to all tipping (although i'm a very heavy tipper), just because i think consumers are already paying a company for a service, and the company should be ensuring the employees are paid adequately to be willing to provide that service.

It's just one of those jobs where traditionally people do not tip. I didn't tip the crew who fixed my roof even though they did a great job; I don't tip the bus driver. Besides, you would probably be unhappy with the results anyway; if you are recieving tips, your employer can pay you a lower base wage, and since they're already cutting salaries for FA's all the time, you can bet there'd be a major wage reduction if you start getting tips. And you can search through the Air Travel category and the Aircraft categories here on Yahoo Answers and see the tons of posts from people, all asking "what's the cheapest flight to blah blah blah." People who are willing to have a 5-hour layover just to save $20 on the air fare are not going to be stellar tippers!

As a *very* frequent flyer (in all three cabins), I have never seen anyone tip a flight attendant. I guess since your union didn't decide on the title "bartender" or "waitress" title to replace "stewardess" years ago (and I'm sure that you would find both demeaning) that this is part of the reason. When I meet a truly nice and dedicated member of the cabin staff, I make sure to let them know that I have appreciated their help, and if the airline has provided me a way to give them employee points or the like, I don't hesitate.
Airfares have continued to climb with less and less service (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are one of the truly wonderful flight attendants that I encounter from time to time), so most of us feel that we are paying enough for the privilege of flying.
Hope this perspective is helpful...

they don't look to be in simple terms making $2.50/hr. Their job keeps them remote from their households and function lots extra stress than in simple terms serving dinner or different service jobs. by using this, they're paid a respectable earnings to commence with by the airways. wanting passengers to pay for those things is nuts. i'd tip them is something undesirable surpassed off, say I spilled my nutrients/drink in all places and they had to sparkling it up... or another intense condition. yet handing out money to human beings for doing their job is turning out to be way too elementary and that i could not see myself tipping a flight attendent for a standard flight's facilities. Edit: i imagine taking off flight attendants do no longer make a lot money each and every year because they arent logging as many hours as a pro attendant. I guess maximum make 30-40k and its in all likelihood common to make extra once you've a great record and prefer to be in the air extra regularly.

If I want to tip a flight attendant, I would just wait at the airport and if I saw the great fa I would hand her/him a tip. I wouldn't do it on the plane.
BTW if it was a good looking male FA I would also pass my cell phone number and email.

i think itsa good idea to tip them if youre buying alcoholic drinks from the pushcart, but other than that, its not one of those jobs where they live on tips as taxi drivers or bartenders
