Physiologically there are seven major nerve centers in our body. Five are at various points along the spine and two are in the brain.

These plexuses are responsible for involuntary actions in the body like heartbeat, etc. A person in a comatose state is still alive because the nerve plexuses in the spine keep his vital processes going.

The Book of Revelation refers to these seven plexuses metaphorically as seven candlesticks, seven stars, seven churches, seven seals, etc.

The ability to voluntarily control these nerve centers sharpens ones senses and provides varying levels of consciousness. John's experiences in his altered state of awareness is what the Book of Revelation is all about.

I think they are in modern Turkey and are the churches of Revelation

There was a good series by Ray VanDerLaan on it and available by Focus on the Family.
