It can be difficult to find a heartbeat with a typical stethoscope. A doppler is the most optimal equipment for it. You can purchase a at-home doppler for about $20 and listen to the heartbeat but you have to be at least 20 weeks along. If you are able to find the heartbeat, it will sound like a regular heartbeat but extrememly fast. Most babies heartrates are 100-160 depending on the sex of the baby, current activity, and if you just ate or not.

We've always referred to it as a "washing machine" - it kind of goes wishy washy - really fast!
