You need to consider a lot of factors before deciding which dog breed is best for you. If you have children, then obviously you need to consider breeds that will be tolerant of children. Some dog breeds are one owner dogs, and will not be happy with children trying to bother them. They will nip.
If you live in an apartment, then you need a small breed that does not need a lot of excercise. Also, do you want to groom a dog, brush out hair every day? Some breeds with long hair need daily care, short haired dogs are best with people that don't want to spend every other day brushing dog hair to keep it from matting, Also consider the shedding factor with long-haired dogs.

Hunting dog breeds like labradors , golden labs, beagles, etc, like to have acess to outdoor yards and have plenty of room to run and excercise, these are dogs bred for being outside and working, so if you live in the country or suburbs and have a good sized yard, then those dogs will be happy. Also, puppys of hunting-dog breeds chew a lot when 1 and two years old, they are very destructive in this stage, until they grow out of it.

Some dogs are bred for cold weather, if you live in hot climates, they will be miserable, unless you keep them in air-conditioning. Some breeds need constant stimulation to be happy, like Jack Russels and sheep herding dogs. They won't be happy left alone all day and will tear up things or bark constantly from boredom.
So, there is a lot to consider, learn about the breeds before going out and falling in love with the look of a dog, before knowing if that particular breed will fit into your lifestyle. Do a little homework so that 6 months down the road you aren't dropping a pet at the animal shelter because it just didn't suit. Your local library will have excellent dog breed books that will give you all kinds of information on the different breeds and from there, you can talk to the breeders of the kind your interested in. Once final piece of advise, do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy a puppy or dog from a pet store. You will encounter all kinds of medical problems from the kinds of puppy mill breeding practices those animals come from. Check with a local veternarian about that. Your local vet will know who the reputable breeders are in your area.

depends on living situation, ie...single/family, apt. or house and also your preference of size. I live in the city in a row home and have had a Great Dane and Rottweiler. Both great family protecting dogs but are large!!
