Your Geneva Convention category describes how you are supposed to be treated as a POW. For example people in Geneva Convention category I can be made to perform certain types of labor (mopping floors, picking fruit mowing lawns, etc.). Category II are supposed to perform supervisory tasks only, Category III are only supposed to perform senior supervisory and administrative duties.

Of course - what these say are pretty much irrelevant because nobody follows these rules anyway.

The previous answer that mentions "or prisoner of equal rank" only means for US holding prisoners. The Geneva Convention outlines the Laws of War. Geneva Convention Cat III on your ID means you are classified as an officer of junior grade or a "Field Grade" officer. It is all based (the categories on the back of the DOD ID cards) on rank. For example I am currently a Corporal in the Marine Corps (E-4) so I am a Category I (Enlisted below the rank of Sergeant). When I pick up Sgt here soon I will be a Cat. II. I'm putting in an officer package at which time I will be a Cat. III just like you. And then WAY down the line when I am Commandant of the Marine Corps I will be a Cat. V (General Grade Officers). Cat. IV is for Majors, LtCols and Cols. Basically, as a POW you rate a basic pay from your captors. The category tells your captors what bracket you should be in. Please see article 60 of the Geneva Convention... I hope this helps. Semper Fidelis, Jackal USMC
