Too bad you didn't get the "rent to own" thing in writing in the first place...I am not sure what everyone is so upset about...you have been paying your brother rent for 4 years so he isn't out anything except a tenant. Good for you for getting yourself a house.

It sounds like both of you have issues in this. First, you entered into an agreement that (doesn't sound like) was in writing at all. Then your brother backed out of the agreement. Then you entered another (verbal?) agreement and backed out of that.

Neither one of you has been acting on the up-and-up, but for your family to only get on your case in unfair.

You may need to be the bigger person here and apologize for your part in it. This is the kind of feud that creates rifts in families forever.

Always get things in writing even when dealing with family. You were right and he was wrong. He must have seen the how well you paid and thought he can use you for income for a long time and changed the arrangement of his verbal vow to you. Always get it in writing because in court it can go a long way.

wow with a brother that treats you unfairly, I would say that you don't need any enemies. Of course many people will tell you that family will treat you badly, and will actually think that they are entitled to do so because they are family. Sometimes we have to take care of ourselves, and stand up for ourselves, first. Best of luck to you, if it is meant for your family to rethink the situation in the future, and talk to you again, it will happen.

Tricky no matter what was said between the two of you in the families eyes someone has to be the bad guy and I guess it's your turn....if it's any consellation it's the same when it comes to money in all families even between mothers and daughters. .....Good luck with your house...

your bro is to blame.when he gets kicked out of his "trailer", and he will,he'll need a place to stay. tell him he can move in with you, but double the rent you paid.

I think that you made the right decision, and your family is wrong not to understand your need to own your own home.
