It's simply a different denomination. They simply have a different style of worship. I was raised Penetcostal. It's never too late.

Often Pentecostals will speak in tongues, raise their hands twoard heaven (and many other churches raise their hands too) You don't HAVE to speak in tongues but it is encouraged.
they often will faint in the Spirit of the Lord
They DO NOT swing from chandeliers!
When I was a kid going to the Pentecostal church, the worship service could go on for hours. Often there would be so much singing - there would be no message. I remember little of the beliefs except once when I asked a question and couldn't get the answer. I asked this question about "what does this mean" I was told, "Do you believe that Jesus died for you?" I would say yes. "Do you believe He is coming again?" I would say yes. The answer was "well, then...."
Apparently I am not the only one with this problem. Many were treated this way. I don't know if they were all Pentecostal or not.

When I went - the only dress code was dresses for women and suits and ties for men. That was a long time ago too.. and every church will be different from every other church.

Like I said, if you feel comfortable with it - go for it. It's NEVER too late. Many newbies find it hard to take. Go slower like Baptist.

Pentecost refers to a specific time in history when believers were "tarrying in the upper room". According to the Bible, the power of the Holy Spirit filled the room with "tongues like of fire" and the sound of a "rushing, mighty wind". Those there were given spiritual gifts, including the gift of tongues, prophecy, interpretation of prophecy, healing, etc.
To be "Pentecostal" means to believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, and that this power can, and does, bring with it spiritual gifts.
Beyond that, Pentecostals differ widely on what they believe. Some Pentecostals believe in tongues, others don't. Some require it as evidence of the Spirit, others don't. Some have dress codes, others don't.
They get their beliefs from the way they interpret the Bible, and its narrative of Pentecost. To be more specific on what it means to be a Pentecostal, you'd have to tell me which denomination.

I am a pentecostal christian. Yes we believe in the Gift of speaking in tongues. You don't "learn" to speak in tongues. The way it has always been explained to me is when your human mind doesn't know what to say your spirit steps in and prays to God. It is in a different language so your "flesh" or sinful nature won't interfere. Our church is very laid back. Again it depends on what kink of Pentecostal church you go to. United Pentecostal (I think) doesn't believe women should wear makeup and all that. I go to Assemblies of God. But, if you are worried call around to a couple and ask if they have a website. If that doesn't do it for you ask to talk to the Pastor. Feel free to ask whatever questions about the church and the beliefs that you want. Ask about the dress code. I didn't go to church until I was 21 now I'm 24. To let you know how laid back my church is I am a Sunday school teacher with her nose and tongue pierced. No one treats me bad. We are all one big family. If you have any more questions feel free to email me. (just add@yahoo.com to my name) If I don't know the answer I will do my best to find it. Hope you have good luck with what you are looking for. Please let me know

I was raised petacostal and i the easiest way to sum it up is this. Most pentacostal see themselves as prayer "Warriors" We beleive in speaking in tongues but not everyone does it and no it it isnt required. The bible says that we are give gifts singualrly and severally as we choose. Speaking in tongues is just one gift of the spirit and it isnt the most important one. There IS fake tongues. But there is also legitimate instances where ppl can give a message in an unknown tongue, but in my experience every single time another person stands up and gives the same message in our own language. You dont learn this. if you do it you know it, if you dont, you just dont, ive never spoken in tongues and I feel no further from god because of it.
As far as the dress code is concerned each congregation differs according to the ppl in it. in my church if you walked in naked with satanic tattoos the preacher would get up and give you his seat. According to him that person needs it more thna he does, lol. I also know of some pentecostals who wear no make up, women only wear dresses, and all along those lines.

Truly you are confused like most of the world, speaking in tongues was nothing but speaking in diffirent languages, see for yourself;
Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Ac 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Ac 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Ac 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Ac 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Ac 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Ac 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Ac 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

They will try to take over every part of your life...very judgemental and domineering group. Fear is their main tool of force. Hell and damnation. It will do nothing but cause strife in your home life. Will divide the family, believers against non-believers. It's subtle but it's there. Raised in it. Got out as quick as I could. Remember thinking as s child "how can these people be so brainwashed".

Shavuot
The Giving of the Torah

Shavuot is the culmination of the counting of the 49 days of the Omer. It marks the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. The Ten Commandments are read in synagogues on Shavuot just as they were in the desert on Mt. Sinai over 3,300 years ago.

The Giving of the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) was on this day following Jesus (Yeshua) death and resurrection. As the Torah is to be written in or on our hearts.

In stead of calling this day Shavuot some call it Penecost.

So some Christian call them selfs Penencostal to reference the speaking of Tongues that was done on this day. They have an Infacense on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And they add a bunch of other junk to there beliefs but reject to Torah.

I WAS raised as a Pentecostal. My advice to you is to stay far, far away from these nut jobs. They screw with your head and are a very malicious, judgmental group of people overall. If you truly are interested in religion, try doing meditation on your own and find your own spirituality. Don't buy into the fairy tales of others -- particularly others who preach hate and intolerance. Is that really the kind of person you want to be?
