Just curious how the whole religion is really "good".
Sections advocate slavery, abuse, and other horrible behavior.
When I bring this up, I'm told it refers to another period of time not relevant to today.
If that's true, then was it really ok to have slavery and demonize women in the past?
Were those the golden years?

Its not a good book. Its filled with contradictions. Justifys stoning disobienent children and incest. The bible is good for a few good stories and parabales. The bible should not be taken literally. A lot of people need to read history books and question what they are taught. Here are the top 10 selling books of all time. A communist maifesto is second from the bible. Makes you wonder...#10 was Valley of the Dolls!

6 The McGuffey Readers William Holmes McGuffey 60 million
7 Dr Spock's Baby and Child Care Dr. Benjamin Spock 50 million

In my opinion this is one of the best questions that I've seen asked!
First keep in mind that not all chapters of the bible was written by one person! Everyone writes differently...and just as any modern day novelist or writer writes from their own prospective...so did the writers of that time.

Secondly...the Jews turned against their maker...thus were punished by being made servants.

Last...I know of only a few places where slavery is actually mentioned...and either spot advocates it nor condemns it. However there are many places where the word servant appears. Servants were compensated for the work they did...therefore I don't believe that "slavery" would be adequate terminology.

I would look at this as more of an example of how imperfect humanity has been since the beginning of time. The bible doesn't advocate any of these things as far as I'm conscerned.

At that time, it was definitely a different period. Jesus would not have stepped on people's toes with their belief systems set at the time. Either you believed in him or you didn't. He was here for only one reason. He was here to teach the word of God. He let us make our own minds as to what was right and what was wrong. He didn't speak about slaves or women being demoralized one way or another. That does not mean he didn't think it. He stopped a woman from being stoned. The reason I believe it is called "The Good Book" is because it's the best selling book of all time. It has sold more copies than any other book in history. It's a good book!

it isn't really a good book, no offense to whoever is christian. when it was first sent down, it was way different. it taught laws similar to the Quran. however, some people didn't like it because they didn't want to follow the way of God, they wanted to follow their evil temptations and imaginations, so, they changed the bible writing in it that Jesus is God's son and many other laws they claimed to be sent from God. the Quran, however is the only book that hasn't been changed. to prove it to you, historians just found a 500 year old quran and it was no different than today's quran. it gives everybody their full rights. some orientalists or inconsiderable people misunderstand the Quran and try to make it look bad. for example, there is a verse in the Quran that tells Muslims to kill disbelievers. these people look at it and say that Muslims are crazy serial killers. but, really, it is talking about a war situation, when people are at war. try reading the Quran, it really is our guide throughout life.

btw...my favorite part was when god supposedly told moses to go into Israel and commit genocide....what a wonderful idea!!! And they turned around and called Hitler a bad person...sheesh!

Well, there's geneology, history, laws, miracles, prophesy, predictions, God's love, God's grace, God's mercy, poems.
The Bible is very relevant to today. Thou shalt not steal is relevant in 1956, 2006, or 3006.
