Is the little weiner dog good? Shedding? Barking? Howling at night? Health issues? Good with 14 year olds? Expensive?

We had a long-haired dachshund for 18 years and have had others in the family. They are very assertive little dogs, bred to hunt badgers. Ours was aggressive and territorial but we adored him. We had babies after we got him and they all learned to get along; he never bit the kids but they had to respect him. My sister's dog was a female and more docile but still very gutsy. She took on a doberman and chased it out of her yard!

Health issues - that long back can be a problem, especially if they jump on furniture or go up and down stairs. Ours needed surgery, he became paralyzed. It wasn't cheap but it solved the problem and he lived 9 more years.

looking to get a weiner dog? trying to compensate for something, r ya? They're good dogs. My neighbor has two of them. They don't shed. They rarely bark. No howling. Great with children. Not sure on the price.

We had a short hair mini for 12 years; made a wonderful pet, very good with children. As for health, seemed like we were always taking her to the vet for interdigital cysts ($150 a pop and she had to wear an e-collar for two weeks so she wouldn't pull the stitches out). I don't know if that is peculiar to the breed. They are subject to back problems, as you can imagine, so don't let your weiner dog do too much jumping up and down off the sofa. As for cost, there are Dachshund rescue societies around, you can get one for minimal cost at one of those.

However, for agood all purpose dog, I would go with a Black Lab.

They do tend to bark alot, but can be trained with a bark collar. Get a short hair they dont shed alot. Make great pets and are truly people dogs. I have one dachshund and a mini pincher dachshund mix, best dogs ever. Cost around 350.00 depending if they have papers then they will cost more. I breed my dogs and I sell them for 250.00. Cute puppies but not purebreed.

They're good little dogs. They usually don't shed to much. Their barking and howling isn't much of a problem with proper training. Make sure he/she doesn't jump up on sofas or chairs to much,it's bad for their backs. 14 is a good age to deal with this loyal little dog. Price depends. Do you want an AKC,CKC,no papers,or a rescue? I would say anywhere between $200 to $500 for a CKC or AKC.
Hope it helps! : )

My dog John Buster Holmes the 3rd sheds like crazy and these little pricks are hyper and this breed is actually a hunting dog they love to run and kill birds and rabbits. You cant leave this breed of dog alone for long periods of time or they will piss on your bed and chew everything in sight. Goodluck playing with your dick

You've got to really take your time and choose a good one, but for the most part, they're fantastic little creatures! I just saw my friend's little guy, Larry, on Sunday; a brown/black little cutie pie who likes to swim in the pool, listens when you call, loves to have his tummy rubbed! I don't think that shedding is a big deal; they're usually smaller than the average house cat.

probably expensive if none of the others.. a good dog is a dog who is properly trained!!! although, if you want a cheap dog, forget the purebred idea!! get a mixed breed from your local humane society! they will find the perfect family pet for you, and often they will give you a guarantee... dog doesnt work out, bring it back and get a different one!!

I don't know for sure. My Aunt had one for 16 years and was the very best pet. I can't remember hair all over the place if that helps any.
