Do you feel that this was a wise decision, given what we're witnessing today with 'si, se puede' etc?

The current immigration reform bills in Congress are worthless. It's the same darn broken song that Reagan sang and signed into law in the mid-80s that provided further incentives for illegals to cross our borders. That so-called "immigration reform" act did nothing to stem the invasion, it only made it worse, just like this "new" one. It will give a back door amnesty to these criminals already here sending the message to others that it's okay, go ahead and break America's laws. Their politicians are too cowardly and scared of us to do anything about it. We will march and riot and burn cities to the ground and in the end, we will get our way. Politicians in America only care about votes!

Amnesty is NEVER a Good idea. It Only encourages more ILLEGAL immigration. CASE in point 3 Million in 1986 Suppose to be the LAST time. Now 2006 they wanna give it to 20 Million. Whats Next 2026 40 Million or more?????? It needs to STOP NOW so we don't have a 40 Million 2026

The thinking at the time was, if we grant amnesty to some illegals and start enforcing the laws currently on the books, illegal immigration would be fixed. That didn't happen because they didn't enforce current laws. That was probably President Reagan's only bad decision.

The lesson to learn for today is: to have a chance at fixing illegal immigration, ~don't~ offer amnesty, and ~do~ enforce our existing laws!!!

why do you imagine the difficulty demands illegals to have the right to amnesty. Yeah that befell in 1986 we also tore down the berlin wall. Granting amnesty to illegals allowed it to ensue. 20 years later we've over populated jails simply by unlawful, drug trafficking between our us of a and theirs because we cant implement or guidelines on them, each and every city the position illegals are congregating in a lot are going bankrupt simply by over populated colleges, underfunded social classes and crime. so why dont we allow in extra lol. that's the decrease back lash of what ronnie did and if he became alive i guess he ought to sense that granting amnesty became a mistake seeing what it has executed to this us of a now. right that's the adaptation between Obama and Ronald Reagan, Reagan did not understand what ought to ensue Obama does he has extra then 20 three hundred and sixty 5 days to be sure the faults of granting amnesty even as reagan did not.

I understand that about a third of the 12 to 20 million illegals here now are relatives of those who obtained the original amnesty, so it seems like it was a very bad idea, at least when enforcement never followed.

Hindsight is perfect, however.

Wise or not, the fact Reagan did it doesn't mean Bush should. We are dealing with a whole different situation this time. We now have national security issues that go beyond anything Reagan had to deal with. Make the illegals legal? What if some of them are members of sleeper cells waiting to attack? What kind of mess would that put us in?

Close the borders. Shoot them onsite.

No, because it caused a whole new wave of illegal aliens to come here hoping to be in on the next amnesty. They say that they are willing to do jobs that we won't. Bullsh**! In places that haven't been affected yet they are doing the same work as illegals. If they weren't hired, then maybe our citizens would get the jobs instead of being passed over for someone who will work for less pay.

No, because we're in the same situation now that we were in then. I have no qualms with people coming to this country to live and work as long as they do it legally. It helped in 1986, like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound. Did they really think that would fix the problem forever????

No but by 1986 he was mentally incapable of making wise decisions.

REAGAN....buddy boy...did more for the Cubans...he didn't do too much for the people from Mexico...he created "the wet foot/dry foot" amnesty for Cubans and others floating into Florida's beaches and harbors...I dont remember Reagan doing anything but creating 'REAGANOMICS'.....
