There should have been a color code card with your shuffle, but basically, when it is orange, it means that it is charging your battery, and when the charge is full, it will turn green. :)

i to had that problem, if after 4 hours of charging the light does not turn green you have a problem. you can go on line to apple and reset it. this did not work for me, however. i took mine to the ipod store, it was unrepairable and they replaced it.

because whenever you connect it, it will charge it. When it's fully charged - green light!
