Remember that dogs are not accessories. Toy breeds will live 10-20 years and can have very expensive problems because of their size. Poor breeding can exacerbate these conditions. Often, fixing knees, legs, teeth, and eyes on small breeder can cost well over $1000, so you'd have to be prepared for that. Our small dog (toy breed) broke her leg and had 3 surgeries by the time she was a year old. Older dogs can have luxating patellas that can costs double that to repair.
Many toy dogs are people dogs. This means they need someone home every 3-4 hours to take care of them. This means letting them out, playing with them, and simply cuddling.
If you are serious about this and can keep the dog and care for it for the rest of its life, check out the akc toy breed area and look into the dogs that would fit your lifestyle. Find a rescue or a reputable breeder and learn more about them. And please, **NEVER** buy from a pet store, backyard breeder, a newspaper ad, or someone who just breeds for 'money' or by accident. I'll provde some links below for you. : )
edit - despite what others have said, there are not mini dobies or mini greyhounds. There are breeds called Miniature Pinschers and Italian Greyhounds - neither is truly a miniature of another dog.

well there are not actually that many small dogs that stay tiny all their lives except for toy terriers. the other small dogs aren't as tiny as a toy but they still stay small. i cant really think of any right now but there are many. if you do get a toy terrier a recommend the chihuahua.

It's Chihuahua...But anyhow all toy dogs are small, so just search "list of toy dogs" Or "Toy dogs" And pick one and do some research on their temperament.
Also NEVER buy a dog that has the word "mini" in it, unless that's it's real name. If you see a mini chihuahua..don't get it..Another word you may see is teacup..THERE IS NOT TEACUP ANYTHING. Most likely if it's a teacup it was conceived before the other puppies and will have a lot of health probalems..so don't buy anything from a breeder who expresses that..

Pugs and pommeranians (spelling?) stay tiny and they are sooo cute. Try going to a pet store or book store and looking through the book section at the breed books and see what you might want. Just make sure before you buy one and always check out your local animal shelter or pound because the animals you can get from there, small and big, are some of the coolest pets. I have a pound puppy now and she's the cutest runt of a black lab you could ever want lol. She's big though 50 pounds or so.

Pugs, toy poodles, small dachshunds, tiny doberman pincher's, miniatures in almost every breed. 11" beagles are another breed. Do you want a good apartment dog or just a small dog? Apartment dog would be a pug, just a small dog a silky terrier doesn't get big, or shed and is a good energetic dog. Really up to you.

The Toy Poodle, people have stereo types of poodles, but they are great loving dogs. I have two, and the great thing is they don't shed, and they are hypo allergenic, They have hair like humans, our dogs are two years old and only weigh 6 pounds. So, look into a Toy Poodle, just try to get one from a personal breeder.

Chihuahua and mini doberman or mini greyhound. Jack russel terriers are cute but they have lots of energy. Why don't you just get a cat? Dogs take lots of time and training no matter what the size.

I have a mini Pomeranian who is only 6 pounds. She is 2 1/2 years old and will never get any bigger. This was the reason we got her. My daughter wanted a small dog for the same reasons you do. Bella is her name and she is adorable. She has become a great companion and was easy to train. Pomeranian are a breed that likes to please their owners.
