I need to know how far back you can pay taxes. I have an aunt that is older and she states she forgot to pay her taxes...she is now trying to oficially retire and she was told she has not paid any taxes for the past 10 years (she was paid in cash) and that she would have to work the 10 years to get SS and medicare benefits.
Can't she just pay the taxes for those 10 years?

Update: Let's say she never made the minimal amount to file and now needs to recieve ss benefits because she is over 65, how can she swing that? Or as my original question said, how far back can you pay with no problems?

You can call the IRS or H&R Block to find out. I used to work at H&R and I am pretty sure if you owe anything they are more then happy to accept it. Although there are late charges for anything after 12 months.

This is a much bigger problem and not nearly that simple. Whether intentional or not, it sounds like she has worked under the table without paying taxes or filing returns, illegal all the way around in the US. She can't just decide at this point that she made a mistake and wants to file the proper returns and pay the taxes. Interest and penalties will be huge, and she could get roped into more legal trouble than she counted on, as I'm sure the IRS is going to want to know who paid her illegally that way (as this also means they didn' pay their share of employment taxes for her).
I'm really sorry, but I'm pretty sure that's the painful fact.

I think what you're asking is "how can i get my 'aunt' (yeah right) back into the system so she can now qualify to file for social security benefits, after not contributing to the system for 10 years? Some people learn the hard way about the underground economy. But there are ways these people can go back to screw the people who were screwing them. I'm not going to explain how, but I'd suggest you go talk to an accountant or reputable tax preparer/enrolled agent.

You can file as far back as you want. You can refile if there were mistakes, but you can only get refunds on refiling up to three years ago. Otherwise, if you are owed money, it just zeroes out.
Contact the newer, friendlier IRS and ask.

I would think she could. I was about 7 years behind and filed for all of them with no problem. The penalties might be outrageous, though. They should negotiate.
