It sounds like he might he may have scratched it. you can apply an ointment such as Neosporin, and if it doesn't';'t look any better in the morning, get him in to the vet.

ok, first, if the blood is dried, don't freak out, that means it's stopping on its own and isn't mortal. If you go to the vet he/she is only gonna charge you 137 or better to clean it, which you can do at home.
You need:
A bowl or pan of warm water
A rag - not something you wanna wash yourself or dishes with
An old toothbrush if you can find one
A dog brush
A pillow - for your butt
First, choose where you want to do this, kitchen or bathroom, and place all of your things on the floor. Then sit on the pillow, and call your dog, and make it sit with the ear toward you. Use the dog brush and brush out the fur on the ear as much as you can, don't use too much pressure though. We are just trying to get some of the dried blood off. This may start it bleeding again, but don't worry.
Next, your gonna take your rag, dip it in the water getting it good and wet - dripping wet. Then scrub the ear - we are gonna get all the blood off - if the blood is stubborn use the old toothbrush.
Once the blood is off, use your fingers feel the ear to see if you can tell where the injury is, check to see the nature of it, and clean it. If your dog whines through this, its normal, but don't give in. The dog is liking the attention anyway.
You can choose to put a triple antibiotic ointment on it if you want, but you don't have too.
After the ear is clean and dry, brush the fur around the wound lightly to detangle any hair that could agrivate the wound and prevent it from healing.
Now, lets look at causes -
If your dog is outside alot, it may have fleas that you need to get rid of. They can itch your dog to the point that when it scratches it can cause bleeding, and then they feed on the wound.
Check your dog's main areas outside, see if there are any sharp rocks or glass that the dog could have cut itself on when rolling around.
You may want to give the dog a bath, sometimes dirt gets caked under the fur, and gets itchy and the dog can do damage scratching at it (like my dog did to her nose today).
Lastly, trim the dogs nails, they could be getting sharp enough to do the scratching that causes bloody cuts (like my dog did to her nose today LOL), pay special attention to it's dew claw - the little claw set back on the front feet.
If it plays with other dogs, trim their nails too, just in case they accidentally scored it's ear with them. Also, watch their playtime romps, some dogs try the boundaries of their playmates and play quickly turns to a dominance fight, and if that happened, it's ear may have been bit.
Keep your dog's ear clean and dry for the next few days, and if her behavior begins to change (it gets listless or grouchy) take the dog in to the vet to get the all clear and maybe some strong antibiotics.
Hope I helped!

If he is not still bleeding you don't have to rush him to the vet. Try to find the source, probably a scratch, etc. Make sure it's not still bleeding from the wound. Clean the dried blood with a clean, warm, damp cloth - gently. Pet Stores sell packs of "Q-tips" that have medicine in them for cuts & scratches. Put some of that on to help heal & prevent infection 'til it's better. Keep an eye on it though. If it looks worse, changes or keeps bleeding THEN you should take him to the vet.

your dog probably has an ear infection. I would take him or her to the vet and have it checked out before it gets worse and the dog loses it's hearing in that ear.

He very possibly has an ear infection. Is there "dirt inside of his ear" and/or his ears on the inside red and irratated. The bst bet is to take him to the vet to get him treated.

Check to see if the dog got bit by something. Even if it is a bite, you should take the dog to a vet....it could get infected.
