I take levothyroxine and have experienced shortness of breath along with a rapid heartbeat... this medication increases thyroid activity which in turn increases metabolism which, if your dosage is too high and needs to be adjusted, will cause these symptoms. Check with your doctor though as soon as possible... it has taken almost three years for the doctor to regulate my medication to the correct level. Until it's correct, you need to go and have a CBC every three months to check your thyroid function... good luck!

The best thing to do is to call a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist if there are drug interactions. levothyroxine does not cause shortness of breath or muscle pain by itself. I don't think xanax does either but the two of them combined may.

I looked up both in my drug book and neither had those as specific side effects. However, a symptom of hyperthyroidism is shortness of breath so I would assume if your med level is too high, this could actually be a side effect. Don't discontinue your med, call your doctor right away, the thyroid can cause some serious problems.

As far as shortness of breath I have not experienced that.

Muscle pain in the legs is normal just being hypothyroid. My muscles hurt constantly until I got my thyroid hormones back to normal. You could try eating foods with potassium in it like bananas, because it is good for muscle cramps. Good luck to you!
