All Autocad programs are backwards compatible. Any older file should open just fine in newer programs. The newer programs can save the file in an older format if you want. Just select "Save as" from the "file" pulldown menu. In the "saveas" dialog box you will see a file type field near the bottom, there you can specify if you want the file saved with compatibility to an older version of Autocad.

Be careful though, some newer features may not be supported by older version of CAD and you can get some funny results.

If you are saying you have a newer cad file you would like to have converted because your older program will not load it. Get a hold of someone with the newer version to convert it for you.

Good Luck!

1. OPEN the drawing in AutoCAD 2004, 2005, or 2006 (same format)

2. Perform a SAVE AS... and in the dialog box choose AutoCAD 2000/LT2000 Drawing (same format as AutoCAD 2002
