Pretty straight forward question. I'm not planning on using cheap equipment, either. :P

First you have to decide what type of photography you enjoy. Totally different skills (people and technical) are required for different jobs. While most specialties have common demands (great organizational skills, placing people at ease, and technical/computer skills) some are very individual in nature.

First if you want to make money in this business you need to be a businessman. You have got to learn what your cost of doing business is. This is a MUST! You have to learn to negotiate. You have to know when to walk away from a bad deal. I can't tell you the number of great photographers I know that can shoot photos but live one step above poverty.

Learn what the market is in your area. Is there a need for more wedding photographers. Does the local event photographer need help...or is there an event photographer at all. What do local wedding photographer charge and is that something you're interested in?

There is a demand for image content providers across the board. But the changes in the stock market and the right demands by some stock agencys make it tough to make money. Be very careful in signing any contracts. Read the fine print. Do not sign a Work for Hire contract. Keep your copyright. Stay up on the trends in the industry. It's a great business BUT everybody now thinks they are a professional photographer.

The first step is to rgister yourself with a photo library. There are many out there, search on google.

The one i am registered to is http://www.arcangel-images.com.

2. Print the photos, frame them and organise an exhibition (this is what my friend does).

3. You might as well organise an exhibition with a charity company, if you are lucky enough, you will get more jobs.

4. You can earn a lot from wedding photography too.

I am a photojournalist. Most photographers do freelance on the side. Shoot weddings, birthday parties, special events. Look at websites and see the what the trend is in shooting weddings. Capture emotion, pay attention to details. Good luck. Stock agency is also a good choice.

There are some basic photographic "rules" that are very useful in making good shots.

This site talks about 35mm, but the basics are the same for digital.
