She comes from a house of two dogs she is declawed we tried a dog, she did not get along. She is too old to play, she is sprayed, and we have a lot of cats (4 others, one female and three males); and even though we pamper her a lot, she never seems happy. I keep her in my room at night (usuaully) and she still isn't happy!

She is allergic to chocolate, so chocolate won't work. I've tried feeding her only the catfood she likes but that makes her crabby. The only time she's ever happy is when she eats fish, but my mother and I can't afford an all fish diet.

Suggestions, please?

Joy

Most cats are not only allergic to chocolate but it will
** KILL THEM AND DOGS TOO!**
HELLO! TO THE IDIOT THAT SAID BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY! THE CAT IS SPAYED! And the world does not need to be FRUITFUL IN CATS!

~If you live in a peaceful neighborhood in which you can walk without encountering loose dogs, consider buying a harness and training your cat to walk on a leash. This training takes time and patience, for both you and the cat, and it's easiest when your cat is young. Some cats can even be trained to sit on your lap while you are on the deck or patio, or harnessed and tied to a stationary object to enjoy the outdoors while you are gardening nearby (but be sure to never leave your cat alone while she is tied to a stationary object).
~Install a perch near a sunny window; padded perches can be purchased at many pet supply stores or through catalog retailers. Another option is an enclosure that sits in a window frame (much like an air conditioning unit) and provides a secure space in which your kitty can "hang out." Larger options are available that attach to the side of a house or ground-floor apartment patio. It's best to allow your cat access to these when someone is home to supervise.
~Play with your cat each day. Try different types of toys that recreate "fishing," "chasing," and "flying" prey. And leave "toys" such as paper bags and cardboard boxes out when you are not home.
~Plant cat grass (available from pet supply stores) in indoor pots so your feline can graze.
~Clean the litter box regularly.

~ CAT NIP it comes in Fresh growing plants or in toys it also comes in BUBBLES cats love to chase.
~ Try different KITTY SNACKS, fish flavors, and maybe if you and Mom went on a fish diet too you could share!
If she is old do not worry about making her happy she might just be a CRANKY OLD CAT, Cats do not always need excitement.
I have a cat that has been cranky ever since my youngest daughter moved out. Maybe someone or something has made her cranky like a loss of someone close to HER?

Chocolate toxicity Top
Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.

When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.

After their pet has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, **with death following within twenty-four hours.**

Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10-kilogram dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or half of a 250gm block of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Thus, a chocolate mud cake could be a real health risk for a small dog. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog unwell.

Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous forms, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate to be affected. Obviously, the smaller the dog, the less it needs to eat.

I have never seen a cat look lonely, depressed, sad, or anything else. I think it is all in your head. However, I agree that feeding her fish all the time is expensive but don't understand how a cat shows happy except by jumping around a lot. As for suggestions, brushing, scratching her ears, ensure her ears don't have mites, tickling her nose, try a different diet once and a while. If a long haired cat, ensure she gets anti hair ball treats, try catnip on her. Give her some grass once in a while, try growing it in your room and let her eat it. (helps with digestion). Keep her clean, (doesn't mean you have to give her baths all the time, just brush alot) ensure no fleas, etc. Let her know you like her better then the others. That sort of thing.

Is the only catfood you give her a high quality one? A food that's better for her, and a wet cat food can help with her health, since it's got more protein in it than a carb heavy dry cat food diet.

How long have you had her? She may just be missing the home she came from and you just need to give her time to adjust.

well obviously some people didn't read that you've already got 4 other cats! but the thing is... maybe she is actually, honestly depressed? you said she came from another home... how long has she been in your home? maybe she misses her old family? maybe she needs to see a vet for a medical condition that makes her seem gloomy? if she is healthy and just cranky- maybe that is just her personality. good luck.
