heaven forbid, but go to the pet store, they have some citrus spray and things you can spray on the garbage cans and the entrances they are using for the attic, cats hate the smell while humans like it..should keep the cats away and save you the cost of bullets.

put orange or lemon peels around the outside of your garage and just inside the door. do the same on the inside of your attic. you could also contact your local humane society and let them know and ask for some traps the catch them in. if you use the peel thing make sure you replace the peels every 3-4 days or just when they are dry to the touch

Easiest and an effective way to ward cats/animals from your yard - pepper!
Sprinkle pepper - and by pepper, I mean ground pepper, not pepper spray - around your yard (hope it's not too big) and garage. Cats sniff out their surroundings before they enter the area, and as soon as they sniff the pepper, I'm sure they're be running away in the other direction.
And NO it is NOT ok to shoot them.
