i.e. is the abbreviation of the Latin words *id est* which means: "that is" or how we use it: "for example".

IE is a commonly used abbreviation for Internet Explorer. The history started when Mosaic came out with the world's first graphical browser, which changed the Internet to the way we know it today. Then Microsoft wanted to make this technology available to everyone with Windows and bought their technology to make the first version of Internet Explorer, and they made newer versions from then on (each new version didn't change that much but looked more attractive)
Then Mozilla created Firefox, a new, easy way to surf the web with its tabbed browsing, Live Bookmarks, enhanced security, Themes and Add-ons. Microsoft was shocked at the rate this browser was replacing theirs, so they were forced to make a new version of Internet Explorer with most of the same features to save its browser from becoming extinct. Version 7 of their browser currently in its third beta and is hoping to come out by next year.
