I think that goal setting is related to motivation and fun, but I'm not sure of the exact relationship. How can goal setting become compeletey effective?

The explanation is so long that I really must insist you read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey to get the whole effect. Essentially, you need to relate work goals to yourself personally. If you feel they are important to your growth, you'll feel they are important. Then break them into small steps. The smaller the step the better. Then you give deadlines to each step that are realistic. Personally, I like to celebrate every other step or so with a personal gift (take-out lunch instead of from home; new book; new dress; etc). This makes it feel more like a 'game show' approach, but it works for me.

Goal setting is important, however remember it is the journey not the destination where you learn achievement. Asking questions about your job that you do not know can lead to rejuvenating your employments interest. If you are in a position that requires a limited aspect of your abilities then seek out other possibilities and avenues in your chosen profession and that will rejuvenate your motivation. If you are in doubt about your profession and feel that you are wasted and it is sapping the essence of being then seek out something that you truly feel strongly about. Stay where you are and wait until the time is right and depart with the newly gained knowledge. Your question has motivated me.

First you need to set a goal. It gives you something to work toward. Something realistic. And then start taking steps toward that goal. If I don't have something to work toward or look forward, I get totally bored and start asking myself "What's the point???!
