The difference is in the perspective the camera "sees".

With a telephoto lens (more than 70mm), the sees a narrow view but objects look larger and closer than normal. This is good for taking nature or sports shots.

With a wide angle lens (less than 40mm), the camera sees a wide view but the objects look smaller than normal. This is good for taking group portraits, etc.

With a macro lens a shorter focus distance allows your to get very, very close to take a picture. This is good for taking pics of small objects like insects or the insides of flowers.

Zoom lenses try to provide all the functions with a sliding lens mechanism.

You can also buy cameras specialized to these different types of photos.

The first answer is a pretty good one, but I'll go into a little more detail.

Telephoto: This lens is meant for zooms and far away shots.

Wide-Angle: This lens gives a very wide perspective. A lot of sports stadiums photos are shot with this type of lenses.

Macro: This is for super close-ups. Ever see those shots of bugs on leaves in great detail? They were taken with this type of lens.
