You should definitely leave your shyness behind and just try talking to him about normal stuff and his interests. I know what you are going through because I myself am very shy, but sometimes you just have to hold it in.

Talk to him alone. when you're talking to him, touch the side of his arm and look at his eyes. Do this and most guys will get the idea.
