"alexG114" it's good to see a well thought out answer. Maybe "Clark GOOF" will learn something.

It was taken during WW II in the Iwo Jima campaign...

This is a picture taken after a bloody fight against the Japanese to secure a very vital island in our way to Japan. The flag mounting on top of the mountain represents the will and the might of the US Marines ( there is one Navy corpsman in the picture,)

This pose now stands as a statue at the gate of Marine Base Quantico. With the Saying " Where uncommon valor, was a common virtue."

It was the raising of the flag over IwoJima. It was NOT a re-enactment. There was some confusion about this as the photographer sent two pictures back, this one and a picture of the soldiers all grouped together after the battle. The editor radioed him a question: whether or not "that picture" was posed. Thinking the editor ment the group picture, the photographer sent back "of course." the picture was taken at the time of the raising of the flag, and not a re-creation.

Freedom. Determination. Patriotism. Selflessness. Sacrifice.

I was born in 1964.
I know it is of Iwo Jima but your question is great because I never really stopped to think about what it represents.

I suppose it represents our (allied) recovery of occupied land during wwII. Further it represents for me wwII, which frankly I feel very removed from. My uncle was in the navy and fought in the war and my wifes grandfather was in the army and fought. I recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by those that have come before in the name of the United States.

Thanks for a great question.

Mount Suribachi (sp?), WWII, Iowa Jima, and it was a reenactment. Check that one out.
