Einstein slept 10 hrs a night every day. I once had a prof who said he slept only 4 (for some reason he imitated lab animals a lot though). I think the real answer is to sleep as long as you find is necessary in order to function, and this number, I am sure, varies by person.

everyone needs 8 hours to rest the body. some more or less depending on how active you are. as you get older, you sleep less and a catnap can keep you going longer.
