My guy wants to get a cat. It's $1000 and a huge waste of money. Plus he's allergic. Anyway, PLUS I already HAVE a cat. So, if we live in a 2 room apartment, he says no cats in the main bedroom so that doesn't leave much room for them to roam around.

In addition to all this, I said ok fine let's get a cat. He said "LETS??" Then he said "I'm paying for it, it'll be MY cat, you already have yours". Now, am I being pety or what? That really bothered me. I thought we could call it ours, but he seems to think it will be his and only his with his own set or rules on how to treat it etc.. This annoys me for some reason. I wish we could say it's ours. Hell now, I'm not paying for half of it though.. I want a cat from teh SPCA.. this whole $1000 bs is his own choice.

Any comments?

Have you asked your current cat what it thinks? Share the living room with another feline? You will most likely have cat wars, and the two cats will have no place to get away from the other. Since the bf is allergic, his allergies which are probably minor with one cat, will get much worse with two, and since it's going to be HIS cat, is he willing to keep it in HIS bedroom for a month while you try to get the two cats used to one another? And is HE going to have the second cat pan in HIS room (two cats means two pans ). And if the two cats never get along, is he willing to always have his very expensive investment in his room? He probably won't part with such an expensive cat, so he'll throw a fit and make you get rid of yours.

You are not being petty, not at all. I don't think he really understands all it means to have a second cat.

I have a few cats myself, and it took many, many months for each new cat to be accepted. Last December I adopted a new cat and only one of my cats accepts her. The other two must be kept apart at all times or they beat her up severely. We're talking major cat fight with wounds and bites, not minor spats. I have a big house with 2 floors, and have to keep cats apart ALL THE TIME, for 6 months now. I finally started letting the 2 mean cats outside all day, and cat wars happen thru the windows. I am seriously thinking of parting with the meanest of the two, as she now bites and beats up the other older cats too. This new cat (half kitten really) has made the older cat's personality change for the worse.

This could happen in your house! Or not. Some cats love company of the feline variety.

An spca cat is an excellent choice. That's where I adopted a few of mine over the years.

Don't pay for a cat. Refuse. The bf can claim the cat as his, but if he does get it, believe me, the cat will claim affection from whomever it likes and enjoys. Cats are free spirits.

ps. with allergies, avoid long haired cats and black cats. I read somewhere that black cats cause more allergy problems. My husband is mildly sensitive to cats, but isn't bothered by our 4. But whenever he would visit my mom's house when she had a black cat, his asthma got horrible and he had to leave within an hour. Only the black cat ever caused this problem (and she had very long fur).

It is a waste of money, dump the guy you are together it should be "ours" not his and hers besides he could get the cat and it may not even like him. Two full grown cats that did not grow up together in a small apartment you are going to have a lot of territory fights and urine markings!!! It your cat is grown it is better to get a kitty not a grown cat!! And since he is allergic I am amazed that he lets you have one not alone get one that is his!! If you want another kitty adopt one from the shelter and then take the $1000 and buy things for them like cat furniture, toys, etc...

Let's see. The 2 of you can't agree on a cat, but you are living together, and most likely having sex. 6 months from now when you turn up pregnant, you will either suck it into a sink, or he will leave you high and dry.

The cat is NOT the issue. You 2 should NOT be screwing and making babies, when you can't even decide on whether or not you should get a damn cat.

He is looking for a status symbol, not a pet. He also seems to be having some power issues. See if you can talk him into a different status symbol--preferably one that isn't living and one he has control over. It's clear he isn't considering the cat to be a living creature with care needs.

Who gets to clean the litterbox, buy the food, take the babies to the vet, etc.?
What about neutering? What if they like each other too much and you and your boyfriend separate? What if they don't get along?
What happens when his cat goes off to preschool and you want to send yours too?
Will one kitty be allowed on the furniture/countertops/whatever and not the other?
