You need to first buy blackout lining, which you can get at any fabric store. Then sew the panels using the blackout lining with any type of face fabric(besides a sheer). Then hang, and you are done. You may want to use a pleater tape at the top and install on a traverse rod. Blackout drapes are heavy, and a traverse rod will make them easy to open and close. You will want them open in daytime as they are truly "blackout"-no light will come through.

I made them for my bedroom, and a neighbor's nursery and I did them two different ways.

The first one I made a regular curtain and backed it (the side that faces the outside) with a heavy felt material, not the cheap craft felt, that can't take the sun. I used the upholstery grade felt and I just cut it to fit inside the hems and it worked. I have had mine for two yeas now. Depending on what fabric you can get, this way the curtains are still washable.

In the nursery, I bought panitable fabric, (Fabric, not vinyl) they sell it you just have to look for it, (Clotilda.com is where I think I got it) It is thick fabric, and can be painted or dyed any color. It does not have to be backed. However, depending on what kind of paint you use, this way they are not really washable. The room is black as night even at noon!

I have also seen people use Fleece for curtains because it keeps the room very dark, sometimes you can find patterns to match the decor and use those clip rings and it is total no sew.

Go to the fabic store, purchase black fabric & a pattern if you really think you'll need it, then go home or wherever there is a sewing machine and sew the drapes! It isn't too difficult, just remember to sew a loop of fabric at the top to put the rod through. & Oh yeah b4 you go to the store, measure the length of fabric you'll need.

There is a material specifically for this. It's used as an inner layer to drapes. You can probably find in anywhere they have drapery & upholstery materials. But it's expensive. :-(

i just went to linen and things and just bought them, i only bought one pair cause each panel is the size of both my windows, if you can afford that way, i used pond linnin on my back bedroom window, just stappled it to the wall and then but a blanket over that and it is dark and it brought down my electric bill
