I told him i don't know. I have been wanting to break up with him for a while now. Is it time to tell him we should just be friends?

To my surprise, you are asking the right question. The best advice ids to tell you to follow you heart (which from what i understand, is you breaking up with him.) But, how many times does that advice actually work, right?!
Well, 95% out of a 100% of people who attemp to break up with a partner, don't remain friends. So, if you two are actually seeing this as a long term friendship, and not a long term love, "folloew you heart," and try to just be friends. Give it some time to ease over, and think for yourselves, and reconcile with a discussion on your ideas. Wishing you the best og luck*_*

If you have been planning on breaking up with him then you should have done it already. Girls I love them all to death but when we break up with them they complain sometimes a little to much about how hurt they are no matter how clean the break up was. Now on the other hand imagine you have been dragging this guy into believeing you still like him and hes just starting to figure things out now on his own accord, you already know what to do, but how would you feel?

If he's wondering where the relationship is going (do you know where he wants it to go?) and you're looking to break up, then that's what you should do. Don't tell him "just be friends". That just makes it worse.

I would be honest if I were you. Dragging things on is just worse in the end because he'll be able to tell you feel differently and he'll be hurt by it. Plus you're not being fair to yourself if you don't want to be with him because your closing yourself off from other chances with people or from being single. Also you are stressing over dating him because you don't feel that same way anymore. Best to be honest, bite the bullet and let him know. Be as gentle as you can, but honest.

He can obviously see that you are unhappy. If you are, just tell him that you don't see it going anywhere. If you lead him on, he could have something totally different in mind. Let him know the truth before you have to turn down an engagement.
