She will 'spot' blood tinged discharge for about 7-9 days, then ovulate (be ready to breed) another 7 days, and still attract males another 7 days....she goes through this every 6 months for the rest of her life, or until spayed.

She is usually moody, pouty, stubborn, restless and disobedient during this time...Please just be patient with her, as she really can't help it.
She will likely try to run away, so you have to watch her very carefully.

How long does a dog stay in heat? The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks. The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen. Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred. While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies.

Some females will have a heat every 4 months. For the most part, though, expect every 6 months. The first heat, in my breed anyway, does not usually come until closer to 9 months of age or older (German Shepherds).

Again, in my breed we see heats lasting for about 2 weeks, and by this I mean the blood that you will find on the kitchen floor. Some females are better at cleaning up than others. Generally, the young bitches when first heat aren't as clean about as when they get a little older.

As far as breeding and when it would be safe to let them near males, well, I've heard ovulating as late as 20-something days. I would keep her safe closer to 3 weeks after first noticing the heat.

A dog is in heat for 3 wks. You will see blood for about the first week but she is not done. So if your trying not to breed her you need to keep her away from a male dog for at least 3 weeks. Some people have said this happens every 6 mths. this can happen sooner in smaller dogs so if your not looking to breed you need to get her fixed.

It all depends on the type of dog. I believe it is about the same amount of time though. My boxer female in heat for around three weeks. She goes in heat and does not accept the male until the tenth day, then she takes him after that.

Female dogs go into heat every 6 months and it lasts for about 3 weeks (21 days). They start having them anytime between 6-11 months of age. That is unless you spay them of course.

The whole cycle can take up to 3 weeks. The actual bleeding part lasts about 7-10 days. It is after this that she is most likely to get pregnant.
You should have her spayed!
