Anything that can be pushed. Maybe a small doll stroller with a big doll. Little people like big things. LOL Also you know the little popcorn push toy where the kid pushes it and it makes that pop corn noise. other hits for my kids were:

Soft walking wheels
Bouncing Tigger
Hello Kitty Magic Brush - it made a magical sound when the bristles were pressed down
Recordable message toys with big buttons - you put pre-recorded messages on there and kids press the buttons, loved it!
board books or large wooden puzzles
If you want to be original - a savings bond or certificate of some sort. My daughters savings account started out with $100 from birth, needless to say, she's definitely going to college!!

Toys that were of no use - all parents make this mistake!
a talking doll - frightened her
remote control elmo with dog - still hasnt' played with it til this day! LOL
I spent so much money on V-Tech toys that I should have stock in the company. They do not make kids smarter! It was the time I took with them to sit down and review/play with educational material that made the difference.

Well how about getting her an educational toy which can be used to help her learn colours, numbers and letters.
Is she walking? If not get her a walker something which can help her to walk as is a balance for her as well as front which is educational.

For a one year old though you can't go all out spending TOO much money as they will not remember it 7 yrs later. So stick with something that will help her to excel in her early yrs of education.
The other side of it is to buy her some jewellery - which is simple.

We bought a beautiful upholstered rocking chair for our youngest daughter for her first birthday. All the learning toys, books, riding toys, etc. have been relegated to sporadic usage only. But at 2, she sits in her special chair, sucking her thumb to watch Veggie Tales, look at some of those books, or just sit back and observe the world around her. Hopefully it was hold up enough to be passed on to her children.

i bought a little touch leap pad and a leapfrog table. He has outgrown the table (he's 3 now) but he still uses the leap pad as it has 3 stages from sounds to words to phrases. He loves Animal Dance the best. Although the pages crease, he can't rip the paper at all!

Since the baby doesn't understand the concept of birthdays, try opening a savings account in a building socy or bank. Did you know that compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world ?

A card board box with some christmas decorations, an inflated balloon and maybe crawling insects. A one year old will probably be very entertained and stimulated.

why don't you get her a savings bond; and a nice inexpensive tape player where her parents could play music for her, or even let her start learning a 2nd language. Young children are like sponges they repeat what they hear, and it would be nice if it where another language instead of cute four letter words.
