This is an anser I gave to a similar question earlier:
"The jury is still out. At present, HD-DVD uses a more efficient encoder (VC-1) than Blu-Ray (MPEG-2), and there is a question if the higher capacity of the Blu-Ray can make up the difference. I would wait a few months and look at high-end magazine reviews (Widescreen Review or The Perfect Vision) to see what the consensus is. I would think that Blu-Ray, with its higher capacity would have the edge if they went to VC-1 (which is reportedly supposed to happen)."
As far as which format will be the "winner", it may not matter; some manufacturers are already working on players that will play either type of disc. This was never possible in the Beta/VHS contest.
HD-DVD will have the edge on disc costs for a while, but I suspect the Blu-Ray group will find a way to compete.

Wait if you can. There won't be much difference in features.
Blu-ray holds more data but a better codec can compensate for this. HD-DVD disks can be made in the old DVD factories, but Blu-ray requires new factory lines. So HD will be cheaper for some time.
The most important thing is who will win the market-place.
The industry consensus right now is that Blu-ray has the edge because Sony is into movies & has signed-up many film studios for movie distribution. Also, the PS3 will use Blu-ray.
On the other hand, there is one studio that has picked HD
(I think) and HD will do the same stuff as Blu-ray for a lot less money. Finally, the computer industry and XBox2 has lined-up behind HD.
People who want to read and burn all types of CD's, DVD's and HD's on one affordable computer drive will have the advantage over Blu-ray. My guess is that Blu-ray will require a separate computer drive.

It's not a matter of what's better but rather which will be adopted by the general public.
Take the betamax scenario, it was better in every way yet VHS prevailed and betamax went bye bye.
Blu-ray will be part of the Sony Playstation, which has a massive following so I feel that Blu-Ray will be the dominant medium for the future.

Well, HdDVD is easier to produce......
Blu-ray has a higher storage capacity and a better streaming.
Blu-ray is backed by some of the most known brands so it has a lil better leverage...... meaning more advertisement and prolly more compatibility.
HDDVD is cheaper due to the lack of quality.
And there are more studios backing blu-ray then HDdvd.
hope it helps.

With today's unpredictable market, you never know. Hind sight is 20-20, so you can either take a (expensive) gamble and choose one now, or wait and see what ends up on top if either.
Remember the wars with BETA and VHS, Laser Disc and DVD, SACD and DVD-Audio?
If you decide to throw caution to the wind and choose one, just choose the one that you like the best (i.e. best performance, ease of use, features) for your taste.
For the record, I choose SACD over DVD-Audio, but ideally, a high-end universal player that plays all of the digital formats would be my ulimate choice. ;-)

Blu-ray has 10GB more capacity.
HD-DVD is easier to produce, cheaper to produce and sell, and the HD-DVD players sold at are a lower price, too.

Do the same as the rest of the market. Nothing.
With all the confusion no one dare buy anything, hence they will both suffer.

Neither - never should have given up Betamax tapes (joke!) (and I bet many people have never even heard of this great 80's format).
