There is a financial councilor within the hospital. Their job is to help those that do not have insurance, or the money needed to take care of a loved one. They should be aware of every program out there that would be available for the family to apply for. All hospitals that are Medicare approved have to do so much charity work and generally have a in-house charity program also, that you could ask about and put in a application. Being that this is July already they may have meet their charity obligations, but check into it anyway. Medicaid is also an option. The people that work in the financial end of the hospital business should be able to help you exhaust every option and open doors to things available out side the hospital. There is also a "County Indigent" program and "Catholic Family Service" (you do not have to be Catholic to apply and depending on where you are, in might be called something else. I have worked in the hospital industry as a Medicare councilor for years, and I still do not understand why they don't make these programs more accessible for people that need the help. Also check into "SSI Disability". It all boils down to asking the "right" questions. Don't give up, just keep annoying these people and make them do their job. There are so many programs available that there has to be one that could help your Mother and your family. I hope you the very best of luck. The louder you scream the more attention you will get. So don't be afraid to be vocal.

the hospital's social worker should be able to help you with this. there are many government agencies that may be able to help you. also, some hospitals (mainly not-for-profit hospitals) can help with the bills if you prove you are in serious financial difficulty. if you can't find the social worker youself, ask you mother's nurse to set up an appointment for you and social worker so you can discuss your situation.

Well, I am sure you wont be abandon: How old are you, are you old enough to work? Do you have any family so they can help you. It is sad that you mommy is sick, but if you are young and only child, then I encourage you to seek for guidance and help. Ask a doctor and I'm sure they can help.
