Very laid back, docile dogs. They need nice long walks (don't need to run) or they tend to get overweight. As puppies, you need to keep them off of stairs and just do small slow walks until they are about 8-9 months old due to their bones growing rapidly and you don't want to break them. Also, when they are puppies they need the best food you can buy and a variety of healthy vitamin filled treats because their bodies are using so much energy in the growing process. As adults feed them two meals a day as opposed to one and no exercise for at least one hour after eating or they will get a condition called torsion and die very quickly and in much pain. Always supplement your adult Dane with glucosamine chondroitin and flaxseed oil to prevent arthritis. Danes are beautiful dignified dogs and they actually are pretty low maintenance when it comes to grooming and exercise. They hardly bark and don't tend to be overly excitable. Great dog, but a very short lifespan due to the giant size.

The Great Dane is regal in appearance, having dignity, strength and elegance. He is the tallest of dog breeds with his great size and well-formed muscled body. Known as the friendly giant, he should show no unprovoked aggression. There are times he may have a stubborn streak, but early training will help alleviate this problem. The Dane makes a great family dog with his gentle, loyal and affectionate nature and patience with children. Adapts well to urban living if given plenty of space and exercise. Despite his large size he should not be kenneled but kept indoors as a member of the family. He truly loves the comforts of home and you may find him sleeping in your big easy chair. Other Names: Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff

They are really sweet dogs. HUGE of course. They can get a puppy growing disease called panosteitis. This is basically growing pains because they grow so fast, their growth plates in between their joints can't keep up. They end up with a limp for a while. The other problem you can have with them is similar to horses. Their stomach's can twist. The stomach basically flips around & twists up the whole digestive tract. They do die from this. We just had one in our office die about 5 months ago from that because the owner waited to long to bring it in. In some cases it can be reversed. Not all dane's get this though, just like not all horses get it.

Ever read Marmaduke? You should research the dog before deciding the breed is for you. I love the way beagles look but I'd never be able to own one. A good way to learn if a dog breed is for you is to see if any breed specific shelters are in your area or if a shelter has a dog that breed and spend some time with one of the dogs and ask the workers lots of questions.

They are very large, and are prone to alot of genetic problems. Hip/elbow problems, heart disease, osteosarcoma (bone cancer). And if the wrong colors are bred together, you get deafness and severe vision problems. And they are not outside dogs. They do best inside your home. They also usually don't have a long life span, even if they are healthy they usually only live 7 or 8 years. They are great family dogs, but think twice. It's alot of money to put out for a dog that won't live very long.

They don't live long, 6-12 years, but are supposed to be really good guard dogs, and shed at a medium rate. They are good around cats and kids, but of course, that depends on the dog. Loyal, active, and BIG companions, they make a great pet.

Great Danes are great... The can eat a 2lb raw steak like it's a snack. And they are like mini horses. Here's a link. I want one too but I already have three dogs and they equal two by themselves.

They tend to only live about 9 years, and they also seem to be victims of arthritis (usually in the hips). Oh, and they have to have their food raised off the floor so they can eat... You must keep their activity level low after eating, because if they get too excited (and jump around a lot) their stomachs can twist, and we don't want that to happen.
