If they start talking about gods, worship and tithing you can be pretty sure they are out for a real profit. I think if someone gives you a line of credit, that would be a false profit.

There are several ways of identifying a false prophet:
1. If they insist that you surrender your will to them.
2. If they insist that you blindly believe what they tell you and/or that you blindly obey all their decrees.
3. If they insist that you silence your rational mind and cling to irrational or primitive beliefs that do not make sense in the modern world.
4. If they insist that they are the only true way and that every other way is blasphemous or evil.
5. If they insist that you surrender a portion or all of your income to their ministry.
6. If they insist that you abandon your family, friends, and loved ones, especially if those people are not "true believers."
7. If they insist that following them is an all or nothing proposition, you are either with them or against them. The option of agreeing mostly with them, but for a few small details is not available.

That's all the signs of cult-like behavior and/or false prophets of which I can think.

A false prophet of what? Of Christianity? Of Nirvana? Of Walmart? And does it even matter? For even Jesus Christ spoke against many aspects of humanity that existed and were considered the norm during his lifetime. I do not believe any prophet can ever be judged as false or true, except as each person judges him/her in their own mind.

Better yet, how can you tell if a prophet is for real? How many people are locked in an asylum saying that they are Jesus returned or one of his prophets? What would happen if the real guy showed up and said the same?

Christ said you can tell false prophets by their fruits. So see what kind of works these prophets are producing. Is it good things that will bring you closer to Christ or are they teaching and doing things that you know are not right. See what they do and teach and follow your heart on what you believe is right.

If you can, you know what to do. If you can't, why worry?

In either case, it's the message, not the messenger that's important to you.

If you believe that when the Devils lips are moving, he's lying, then just ask him where he came from. He has to lie, so he'll point to heaven...go there...forget him...

Unless you think the Devil doesn't always lie...then you've got a real problem...

If they are telling you that God is judgmental and would punish anyone for any reason, or If they say God would do anything but love they are a false prophet.

There are a lot of them around.

1 John 4:2,3
2. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3. but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
