Adding the "H" is an attempt to get the point across without taking the Lord's name in vein. The "H" doesn't stand for anything. Jesus Christ is the saviors name. Jesus H. Christ is a fictitious name and is therefore safe.

first lemme say that this is the BEST question that i've seen on this thing....ever!!! I almost fell of my chair laughing!

The reason it struck me was because this is one of my most used expressions, and I never really gave it much thought....about what the "H" stands for!!!

If i had to give it my best guess....Hepburn!!
...and that's just a joke...had a friend once...that was his first name!! Jesus H. Chirst!!! Who names their kid Hepburn???????????
