The times between seeing your family depend on where you're stationed. If you're stationed overseas, you won't get to see them as often, probably just once a year. If you're stationed here in the states, you get 30 days of leave per year. You can take that many, or save them. You will get to email them while you're underway, but don't count on the email working great every day. You'll be able to send and receive email, but they may take a while getting back and forth. Some days it works great, some days it doesn't. You won't have phone service all the time underway, but when I was on deployment in 2003, they had a room with 3 phones in it, and special calling cards so that you could call home. But you had to wait in line, which could be hours sometimes. Bring a book. Usually, when you're underway with a group, the ships take turns with the email systems, so you may only get emails during certain hours of the day. You will stand at least 4 hours of watch a day, in addition to your normal working hours, which are usually 7-4. After that you can read, watch movies, play on the computer, stuff like that. Navy bases differ in their niceness from coast to coast... San Diego base was really nice, but Norfolk and Little Creek(Virginia Beach) were just so-so. Depending on what rate you pick or get assigned to you when you join the navy, you could be on a ship for up to 5 years. Each rate(job) has a different sea to shore rotation. Hope I answered your questions good enough. I did 6 years in the Navy.

Ok husband in navy. But this is what I learned. To see your family you get 30 days a leave per year. But if you are on in shore duty. They can come see you. Because most of the time you work like 8 hours shifts. Talk to you cheif about that though. Sometimes they will help you. You will be able to talk to your family through e-mail. But not on phones. Phones when you are in port or home. Not on Ship. Most ships work 12 hours on 12 hours off. My husband though worked 6 hours on 6 hours off. It will very with the job you decide to take. That is on ship of corse. This is everyday you work inculding weekends. Most the time when you hit port they give you liberty. Which is time off. If you want to play computers in things. Bring your own. Lab top, psp, things like that. The navy bases are nice. In fact they are just as nice as the AF. Deployment verys. I cannot answer how long you stay out. You can go out for over six months. Or as little as one day.
Good luck to you.

At best you can likely get to see you famiy twice a year, for about two or three weeks in total. (then there is time you just rather not see them)
on board a ship, E-mail, Yes, probably daily. Phone calls not so often, that will get expensive.
When you on on the ship you will get off time to read, play video games, Spades, chain smoke, take some correspondence courses, watch the same movies over and over again.
Navy bases; depends on where you are stationed, most of them for E1-E6 are dull cinderblock walls with 30 year old furniture. It'll smell like cleaning solution. Beds are generally decent. TVs in the lounge, Mod, etc are accessable, In the mornings they will ALWAYS be on on ESPN, afternoons it will ALWAYS be on either MTV, VH1, BET or CMT.
The galley/mess hall. Depends on where you are stationed on how good or bad it is, the worst on was in NAS North Island, best one I ate at was NAS Meridian.
The longest shore duty you'll see is 36 months. the longest sea duty time is 60 months.
Oversea; no idea, never stationed overseas.

Actually navy is also of 2 types.. one is Merchant Navy.. which is not affilated by the govt of the country u live in and another is Country's navy..... and tht is called the defense navy... soi dont know in which navy u r going into..... but in merchant navy.... u r an engg.. who works on the ship fpr 7 months a yr.. and u have freinds as saliors.. and no entertainment and u have to work some wht like 20 hrs a day.... but you get goodmoney also... and u r off the work for other 5 months for which again u get paid for doing no work.... but life is real tough... and u can also take ur family on board.. with u .... but in Country's navy as a defense navy.. i think u go on ships if u have a certain rank and u do do work according to the rank u have... on top of tht ..thts a govt job and u get many facilities (upto ur govt.) in general life.... and money is less than merchant navy..... and u also get transfers a lot..(means postings) So in the enteretainment thing... dont forget u r on ships and not a cruise... so yes there is entertainment like reading books and sitiing and gossiping with fellow saliors... and yes u r not even allowed to go on decks in the midle of th ocean as u have so strong winds tht thy will carry u along,... and there is a risk of life in both the navies.. thts y these ppl are given facilities and goodmoney.... so desicied wht u want .... and Best Of Luck

Deepnds on what your rating is, how long your schooling is, what command you get and that command's OPTEMPO.
Shipboard life: generally speaking.. regular email access, but not every day, and there may be times when it is down for a whole host of reasons. Phones: only while in port. As for free time..underway.. not a whole heckuva lot. In port.. possibly, but your free space is limited and you may not have room for a lot of personal items Lap tops maybe, PCs no way.

If these are your concerns, don't join. If you do, there most likely will come a time when you are told to kill people and you will probably feel compelled to do it and then you will have psychological problems for the rest of your life.
