Chronic myeloid leukaemia, affects the myeloid cells in the blood, that is all the blood cells except the lymphocytes. The word chronic describes the comparatively slow progress of the disease if left untreated. Most patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia can be treated effectively with anti cancer drugs. It is not however generally considered possible to achieve a cure solely by drug treatment. A relatively new drug, called, Glivec, may change this picture but it is too soon to predict the long term outcomes of this therapy.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a leukemia which has been grouped in a category of blood diseases known as chronic myeloproliferative diseases. Included in this group are the following disorders:The prognosis for leukemia depends on the patient's age and general health. According to statistics, in chronic lymphoid leukemia, the overall survival for all stages of the disease is nine years. Most of the deaths in people with CLL are due to infections or other illnesses that occur as a result of the leukemia.

In CML, if bone marrow transplantation is performed within one to three years of diagnosis, 50-60% of the patients survive three years or more. If the disease progresses to the acute phase, the prognosis is poor. Less than 20% of these patients go into remission.

I had bone marrow transplant after several different kinds of chemo had no affect. I am 26 months cancer free. Just plan to stay that way. The other diseases that come along, when your immune system needs to rebuild.was not pleasant.also having 21 "BABY SHOTS" wasn't a cakewalk either. onward and upward!!
