I have been smoking pot for about 18 years now, I want to quit. I don't want rehab, but everytime I am out that's all I can think about is when can I get more. I don't feel like myself unless I am on it. I don't do anything else so it wasn't like it was a gateway drug for me. Does anyone have any advice for me? Anyone wanna be a peer support for me? Could I control myself to do it once and awhile and not EVERYDAY!!

The first thing you need to do is get real with yourself! You by your own admission are addicted. So stop fooling yourself that there will be an easy fix. If you want to overcome it you need rehab and you need help. You're taking the first step. But Yahoo Answers is, um, not really gonna do it. Call a drug hotline. And please don't think that because it's pot it not that serious. Come on, give yourself a chance. You're worth it. You want help but YOU must take the first step. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and take control of our life! YOUR LIFE!

Wow. I'm in the same boat. I'm am around people who do it and like being around them and damn sure like smoking it. And yes it's very hard to quit. And no matter what anybody else thinks, IT IS ADDICTIVE.

I have tried for 16 years to quit and the only times I have succeeded was when I got pregnant with my 2 children. I had a very good reason then, I had to make a decision for someone else.As soon as they were born I was back at it. I find it very hard to quit for me. I have been asking myself this same thing for years. I know it's bad for me but yet I can't say no. 7 days was the longest I ever went without being pregnant and that was due to not being able to find it after Hurricane Katrina. Sad isn't it?

The only thing I have found that helps me cut back with it lately is.. I buy a half and divide it up into 2 weeks worth using film canisters. I smoke 1 canister/day (which isn't nearly enough for me) as you probably know. I have done this for 2 months now and I actually feel better during the day and it seems to work for me. Sometimes I don't even think about it. I am strictly forcing myself to adapt to these habits and slowly I will ween myself off of the dang stuff. It's really hard to quit quit when you enjoy it so much. No I haven't quit yet but I sure have saved a lot of money by cutting back and that makes me want to quit even more.

I hope that helps.Slow and easy. Good luck. Eventually you can enjoy being a social smoker off others weed. That way you can have your cake and eat it too.

Maybe that was a little over board. But hey I'm addicted to it.

try the recently approved anti smoking drug that plugs pleasure receptors in the brain, medicines such as Zyban (Bupuprion), or

Quitting is easy for some, but not for most.
Studies have shown consistently that patients that seek the help of a doctor, therapist or nurse are more likely to get off and stay off cigarettes.
Numerous anti smoking aids are available as well.

Set a quit date

If your partner is a smoker, try to do it together, as outcome will be better.

Identify your weak points – alcohol is a biggy – and avoid them or plan distractions – for e.g. if you smoke after a meal, find something else to like take the dog for a walk

Avoid sabotage – advise your friends who smoke you are quitting and tell them pointedly not to offer you a cigarette even if you’re begging. Unfortunately they can sometimes like having a “partner in crime” and may taunt you to have a cigarette. Friends like that need to be set straight.

Find a substitute for the habitual part of smoking – many people find gum is helpful. Be cautious about food, many people do gain weight after smoking however it does usually come off in the following year. Remember that you would have to gain 100 pounds of fat to equal the risk of just 1 pack of cigarettes.

If you have failed before, don’t despair – most people take many attempts to quit. However, each time you quit strongly increases the likelihood you will eventually quit for good.

Put the money you save in a jar, to be spent on your birthday, just for you.

Try a smoking cessation aid – there are many non – medical aids such as hypnotism, acupuncture, smoking tapes etc, these are helpful for some and worth a try if not too expensive and the habit part of the smoking is the part you miss the most.

If the nicotine cravings are the hard part for you, then the patch may be helpful. It is important not to smoke on the patch. There is also nicotine gum which some patients have had some success with. It tastes a bit foul if you don’t follow directions precisely.

Zyban (bupuprion) is a very useful drug, but not available in Dubai currently. It is an antidepressant that controls both nicotine and habit cravings. It can be used indefinitely and I was impressed with its effectiveness in the past. It as well as the patch should be used under doctor’s guidance.

Exercise is extremely important aid to quitting, and good for taking your mind off the cravings as well.

So I quit, and now am coughing and stuffed up and feel worse than ever!

This is not uncommon. The cigarettes paralyzed the cilia hairs in your airways and now they are starting to work, they are mobilizing all the junk you have been retaining in your chest and airways. This is a good thing, so hang in there. It may take a month or two to clear out.

Quitting smoking is the single most important thing you can do for your health and the health of your family.

Print off the first page of this article and post it on your fridge, or give it to someone who should quit. It is a nice reminder of the good you have done your body when you butt out!

You know what i had the same experience...........

But after last weekend and my doing a lot of birdbrain shyt I just decided that was the last straw......ALTHOUGH i was under ALOT of stress and there was ALOT going on that my mind wasnt functioning right anyway but at that point I just decided I was through........

And when youre through you're through.........rehad is a bit extreme I think.........

You're doing good by not doing it everyday........

Baby steps is fine..........eventually you wont even need or want it.........

I just had to will myself away and every time I feel Im being swayed because Im still young and EVERY one of my friends does instead of hitting the blunt I think about my daughter and think is it REALLY worth that cell or two..........I've sacrificed enough of them I'd like to keep the few I have left ya know ;) hehehee

And considering Alzheimers runs in my family I just had to take my health into consideration.......Once you get to a certain point you just start putting everything into perspective........and when you're ready it'll happen.........

You know what they say better sooner than later.........but I wasnt perfect I've made this attempt plenty of times..........Granted Im only a week in but hey you have to start somewhere and its not easy so Good Luck............

**I only smoke weed (PURPLE AT THAT) ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH SO SORRY IF YOU SPRINKLE YOURS OR ARE ON ANOTHER LEVEL............pray about it

Wow, That is tough. I smoked for 25 years and wanted to change professions so I had to stop in order to be tested. I havent smoked in 6 years now. I didn't do anything special I just kept telling myself I had to stay clean in order to get and keep a really good job. I guess I was lucky because after about 3 days of craving it I haven't missed it since. Good Luck!!

I smoked cigarettes for years and finally quit using this method. I know pot and cigarettes are different but I hope this helps. First I found a friend who wanted to quit with me. Then I had my best friend who I love dearly to look me in the eye and ask me to quit for her. Now whenever I think about smoking I think about her and I feel stronger than the craving.

i was in the same boat not too long ago. first you need to stop hanging out around the people that are smoking that only makes it harder to stop. next you need to start doing other things that will make you happy and keep your mind off of it. it's hard to stop smoking when you are sitting around doing nothing and bored. you have made the right decsion now just stick with it. and i wouldn't suggest using every once in awhile that is a good way to fall back into using full time.

Oh will you please stop it. It's a mental thing, pot is not addictive. You can stop if you find something else to do than smoke pot. go for a jog (work off the munchie pounds) walk in the park, get a job. You don't need professional help to quit.

One step at a time, my cannabis-addled friend!

First - admit you have an addiction.
Say it: "addiction".
Get used to it.
It does not matter if you were doing weed, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.
The point is, you have an addictive behavior issue.
Recognize that.

Second, go see your doctor.
Tell him/her what the problem is and ask them for a doctor referral (not "reefer") to a professional that deals with addictions.

Then, go to that professional and follow their advice.
Do what it takes.
Get yourself straight.

Third thing to do:
Find a healthy exercise alternative.
Like running, bicycling, swimming.
Get yourself healthy, get your lungs healthy, get your heart healthy.
All that smoke is BAD for your body.
I know - I can relate to a lot of what you are writing about and I took the above-mentioned steps to improve my situation.

Last thing is to be strong - mentally.
This is gonna be tough to change years of behavior.
But most of the work is gonna be inside your head.
Stay focused and stay in touch with your goal, with your reality.

Good luck.
