Imagine hanging a ledger board midway up the exterior of a stud wall, yes, remove siding , but then, were's the beef?? No rim joists, no joist headers, so, What do the lag bolts ancor into?? the stud?? Know what I mean?

You'll have to figure out good attachment points if it's above the foundation, otherwise you'll have to attach to concrete. Make sure the ledger is beveled so as not to divert water back to the house, and to flash under the finished wall and over the top of the ledger. Lead-coated copper works best, aluminum is a lot cheaper. Also, if attaching to wood, make sure to use stainless ring-shanked nails. They don't rust, even where you strike them with a hammer, unlike hot-dipped galvanized nails can.

Ledger board is never attached to the outside of a finished wall...remove siding to expose your rim joist and then lag bolt your ledger board flat against it.
